would never change the ending! It is a pity that Frodo goed away and that sam's still there, but i would pick such an ending if i was tolkien, i think
Well, actually Sam also sails into the West after his family dies and stuff. He was a ring bearer for a short while so he also passes West.
Now that's a good way to state it. I would add to the appendix. I can't believe I didn't think of that.

That's right, I forgot about that! Thanks for reminding me, Arien Elensar! I would add chapters on to the appendix, just so the book wouldn't end

Oh! The ending is SO sad! I would've told Tolkien to write it so the entire fellowship could live happily ever after in Minis Tirith with Aragorn and Arwen LOL That would've made me happy ;D

I wanted more of that too, I loved in FotR how their group acted, all following Gandalf and the inner fights with Boromir & Aragorn, and Legolas & Gimli, and the closeness of the hobbits among the humans.

ahh, but that loss is one of the things that makes the "breaking of the fellowship" even more dramtic and climatic, could you imagine the whole fellowship going into modor together?
I couldn't

That would make the book to happy and unrealistic.

They'd probably get caught too. Too big of a group.
The ending I think was the best part! It was a happily ever after because Frodo was going into the West to be free from suffering, but it's also sad and realistic because he has to say good-bye to his entire world.

that's what I had at first thought.
I didn't think of the unrealistic part, but it would hurt the book a lot more than it would help it. The tragities add to the book, and make you better relate to the story.
I love the books, so many different ways to interpet them. :-)

Exactly, there's always more than one way to look at them. You ahve to look at a situation with the pros and cons.

I agree with both of you. The simple truth is, tragities are a part of life.

there would be no compassion without suffering
and I think compassion is a main part of the book (with Smeagol and all)
