Every time I re-read the ROTK, I become more+more amazed. Eveytime I read it I get sadder, and so everytime, I feel like that, I become more amazed that, Tolkien had the heart and strength to write, such an ending. Maybe it was just a good way to end his masterpiece, would you change the ending? [glow=purple,2,300]Be honest[/glow]

I think it's pretty much the only right way to end the story. Realistic, mixture between sad and they lived happily ever after. Wouldn't change it. He did a great job.

the ending is brilliant...every time i finish reading the book, i close it with a sense of awe. how could frodo ever go back to the way things were, anyway? i don't think there is another way to end such a great story. i mean, what frodo did was unimaginably difficult and grand...he would never be able to live in the shire ever again, no matter how much he wanted to.

I have sorta redone the ending in my head, just because it was SO heartwrenching to see Frodo go, I mean Sam was so devastated! But I would never want to officially rewrite the book's ending, no. The ending was sad, but it was still good. Tolkien had a way of doing this... the book's a classic in my eyes, and you just can't mess with such a story.

Yes, that's true. The ending in the book is truly sad. I feel like crying everytime I read it. Well, I'm reading the book for the 2nd time around now and I'm at the chapter called The Siege Of Gondor. I wouldn't have the ending end any other way.

I'm not sure whether it is an ending you can like, but it is an ending you can come to accept. It's realistic - things change, people change, and sometimes you change at a different rate to the things around you. What Frodo went through was life-changing, but the Shire was still the same. He didn't fit in the way he originally did. I'd have been happier if Tolkien had written a happier ending, but I think he wrote the right ending.

He wrote a real story. That's why it had to end that way. The Lord of the Rings would not BE The Lord of the Rings if it had ended happily. It wouldn't be realistic. Especially the Scouring of the Shire... Think about it...in real life, do you think that everything would be back to normal, after the war? No. There's no way that the Shire could be the same. To make it believable, Tolkien wrote it as if it had really happened. And if it did happen, circumstances wouldn't allow for a safe Shire. It just wouldn't be possible...

NO! Frodo is now happy, and that is at least something. His wounds are finally healed.

Well I really don't know how he could have found it in himself to right the endings as I feel sad and I cry reading them, but it must have been even worse for him!
I wouldn't change anything about the ending. It is a sad ending, but it is also a nice ending.

The story is about death. In the end of the book I'm sorry to say that when Frodo leaves it really means that he is gone, just as if someone dies.

Yes i agree with what you just said..it just wouldnt be really believable if the war ended and everyone went back to normal and didnt even have a care in the world about what had just happened.

Everytime I close the book I, too, am filled with a sense of awe. I don't know how to describe how I feel about the ending, it is heart wrenching, yet happy too. Frodo will live what is left of his life in peace, but.... . All in all, I think it's the best ending there could have been, because it is the most probable thing that could have happened

I wouldn't change the ending for the world. It has a contented melancholy about it - that's why I think we love it. It's very realistic - there is sadness, but happiness is born of that sadness.
