I wouldn't have the heart to change it - it'd be like changing the taste of something you like, like Strawberries!

I love the ending. Its bittersweet. Its realistic (as said before). Its part of what makes me love the books so much. It makes it not completely fantasy and have some real life lessons. Bad stuff happens, it doesn't end completely happy (like everything in life) but there's always hope.

I don't think I would change the ending, Though I would have liked it if Pippin and Merry could have gone into the west.

Well I like the ending bcos the ending is determined by the readers. In the appendix, it said sam sailed over the sea but it didn't say whether he's united with frodo. He could be drown since he dislikes boats and doesn't know how to swim. But I'm pretty sure everyone would embrace a nice ending.

The first time I read the end, I was really surprised and sad. "Porr Sam" I thought. But hey, I love that end, and everytime I read it (or watch the film) again, I go on thinking "Poor Sam!" But I won't change it never!!!

i still can't decide whether or not that was a good ending but Tolkien must have put a lot of efort in particular to making that part of the story!!

I would never change the ending. Part of why I like LotR is because it has a little bit of real life in it, which helps it become all the more realisic.

Almost every story needs an end. Though easy or hard someone has to do it. and Tolkien wrote it all so he knew all the mysteries of the books.

True. And the most comforting thing is, that Frodo goes with Bilbo and Gandalf and isn't all alone on his way to Valinor. And Sam is later allowed to go, too. I hope he doesn't find his Master dead. I know it might not be right, because the death is a gift no punishment given by Illuvathar to menkind, but still - after what he did and suffered it would be great if he would have been still there when Sam arrived. And this part of the ending is open so I am allowed to make it up for myself. Thats the real genious of Tolkien.

He knew all the ins and outs of the world cause he created it so it is much easier for him. He has knowledge of the place that we can never have because he started all of it. It is a door that is closed to us.

I thought the ending was amazing! Although if I hadn't read the Appendix, i probably wouldn't have been so happy by the end, because in that I figured out that Sam goes West, too, and that changed a lot of my feelings about the ending. I thought Tolkien did the best job anyone could possibly do.
