I agree with Nienor, and i think what also made it so real is that its not JUST a book. He made maps of middle-earth, he made timelines, he made tons of different languages, he made it SO real. That some people might actually wish that Middle-Earth was real!

Right! The complicated histories made it so much more than just a novel.

Definetly! He made a world, not just a book. And, all the characters are real. There are no absolutely perfect characters. Even Galadriel has temptation...

Tolkien's works are so believable because of everything her wrote, not just the stories but timelines, and he made up several languages, and every story interlaces with the others. It was not just a book that he wrote, but an entire world that he created with hostories stretching back to the moment it was created with the song of the Ainur.

Very interesting insights, and very nicely thought out! Yeah, I think to summarise what we have been talking about, most people would agree that a lot of authors create their book, but don't go into very much detail as far as language, character, etc. Tolkien was very thourough (I don't think that's how you spell that...), and it shows in the fact that he created an entire world, and did not just leave it at creating a book.

Whoops- That last post by me was by my brother, Radagast. He apparently forgot to sign on to his own name.

Yeah i mean..he made an entire world!! theres soooo much history in the book, and one thing i have always loved is that, i believe that Tolkien did certain little things on purpose, like making people wonder what happened to the Entwives, and so much more. Its just amazing.

I've got to say, everything there is about it! So much description about the Characters, drags you into their worlds, and it's got to be said, there's nothing unbelieveable about it. In fact, Was that a Hobbit at my door... ;D

I think that the LotR books are believeable for a lot of reasons. Recently, people have been talking about how he created a whole world, which I think is the biggest thing. He created all these different cultures and languages. I also think the characters are very real. I remember that this particularly struck me with the whole Denethor/Boromir/Faramir thing. You can understand really well how the characters feel and why they do what they do.

Definetly. And yet, at the same time, he deliberately (I think) holds back information. Like do balrogs have wings, what happened to the entwives, what color hair does Legolas have, etc. It is alot of the little things that make him really great in my opinion.

I know thats one thing i have ALWAYS thought about Tolkien, i always thought that he did that on purpose! Its just so amazing..and i bet that right now he is glad that people are asking those questions and trying to delve in deeper to find the answers to all the things he left a mystery.

i think that the way that tolkien explains everything is the thing that makes the books and movies so believable.

For me, it's how in-depth Tolkien went with the cultures. Also, I like the fact that many of the cultures you think you could see in our world, but you can't really pinpoint where.
Also, it doesn't really have a fairytale ending, does it? Eowyn's heart is broken only to be mended by Faramir, he hobbits return home to see their country in Ruins, Frodo leaves Middle-earth, etc. It's very honest in that "joy through the pain" approach.

Basically everything everyone just said. How much effort and work Tolkien put into it and how realisic all the character are, each with there own personality and weakness, and how much we can learn from them. I know that after reading LotR I've become a better person just from remembering Sam's loyality to Frodo and Legolas and Gimli's unlikely friendship.
