For anyone who's read the books, they no what I'm talking about, if you haven't read them, SHAME ON YOU and feel free to ignore me. But anyway, I was so upset that took out the scouring of the Shire, it was one of my favorite parts and Merry and Pippin finally got the respect they deserved in the Shire, it was their big moment!

They explain why in all the various interviews on the Return of the King extended edition appendicies discs. I can't exactly remember the reason at the moment, but they said something about it didn't fit somehow, and I think they also meant it would be too massive of a scene with too much emotion on top of all the other massive scenes with lots of emotion that ends the movie. LoL it made sense anyways when Peter explained why! He also said you can see the scouring when Frodo looks into Galadriel's mirror, and they just left it as an alternative future for the Shire, what could happen...

Well, as PJ and co said in the movies they were following the story about the Ring and there was no need when the hobbits come back to the Shire to have one more battle against evil, I think that this is a nice decision after all. And by the way if you don't know in the ROTK EE you can see Saruman's death (and Grima's death also) in the begining of the movie when Gandalf and co are in Isengard.

Well, think about it. The movie is already really long, and after all the emotional stress of the Black Gate and Mount Doom, you go back and have another battle....Most people by that point would be thinking, "Didn't they know when to stop this movie?!" Not to mention a lot of people wouldn't have really understood the whole situation. I loved that chapter...but I don't think it would have worked in the movie.

Yeah, it works perfectly in the book, but it's not really a movie scene, epecially after all the other battles and things. People who haven't read the books would probably say "What the heck?! ANOTHER battle?! The movie's already 3 hours long!" And they also though that once the ring was destroyed then that the end!

In a movie perspective, the destruction of the ring is the end of the movie. It's the end of the major plot, and to a movie audience, there needn't be any more.

If the Scouring of the Shire was filmed, it would have been very long. The hobbits go through comming back, getting arrested, starting a rebellion, organizing the troops, fighting, etc... It would take a 3+ hour movie and make it reeeeeeally long. And there might be some confusion as to who Lotho and others are.

A good way to sum it up would be that if the Scouring of the Shire was included, it would have caused' battle fatigue' for the audience, especially as it's not entirely relevant to the main story. The Ring is destroyed. The end. < that's how some people look on it.

I loved that part in the book, because it is the part where you learn what becomes of the characters you haven't heard of for a long time, like Saruman etc. But in the movie you already get a sollution (at least in the EE), and that chapter would have made the movie too long. By then everyone has already tought at least four times the movie is over, but always another part comes. It would start dragging on.

It's also, imho, a matter of how you preceive LOTR. PJ and Co treated it as the same kind of story as the Hobbit, a "there and back again" as Tolkien terms it.
If PJ and Co had included the Scouring of the Shire, he would have lost the "There and Back Again" feel he was going for in the movie.
Including that sequence would have lengthened the movie rather than tying it off, and would have brough a different feel to the entire film.
It would have brought PJ and Co's beloved there and back again straight into the spirit in which Tolkien wrote.
According to our beloved author, he wrote a Quest, not a There and Back Again. Things change, and PJ wanted his characters to come back changed from an adventure, not to have their own world unsettled when they return to it.

The reasons for taking it out are entirely justified, and also I didnt like thta scene too much anyway in the book, because poor Frodo..he has done so much, but because hes not a great fighter, he doesnt get the recognition he deserves. |

Two words: BUDGET. TIME. The movie was long enough as it was, and they didn't really need it after they changed the plot parts so much in the films... also time as in production time could cause big trouble. Directors are on a timetable! And money.. it runs out sometime.
Though I admit I did want to see Merry and Pippin get the respect at last.

Yes, that part annoyed me too. I was like, oh boy, here the part comes. And when the end of the movie happened, the shire was like peaceful. That got me angry. I was looking forward to it. But the movies are still good.

I was sitting in the theatre and I was thinking oh the movie won't be over for a while b/c after they get back to the Shire they gotta rebel against the eveil men and stuff. But then it wa all pretty and green...i was very mad at the time. I see what you guys are saying about it not being a movie scene, but the part about it making it even longer... If they had not had Faramir take Frodo to Osgiliath and instead just let him go as he did in the book, there would have been extra time. Shelob could have been put into TTT. AND they would not have changed Faramirs character so much  that made me sad. My least favorite change PJ made....OH well, I can't change it so no use complaing. Besides, at least there ARE movies, and pretty good ones to say the least. |
