My favourite is: All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not whither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, From the shadows a fire shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king. I like a lot of the other ones too but that one always sticks in my mind. Especially the first half (which I have memorized) b/c it is very true and can be _____ to everyday life not just lotr. (i couldn't hink of the word so I put a blnak.) ^^^^I LOVE this poem! It shares the position of my fav with two others:^^^^ -"Though here at journey's end I lie in darkness buried deep, beyond all towers strong and high, beyond all mountains steep, above all shadows rides the Sun and Stars forever dwell: I will not say the Day is done, nor bid the Stars farewell." - Samwise Gamgee, The Return of the King. ____________________________________________ "Gil-galad was an Elven-king. Of him the harpers sadly sing: the last whose realm was fair and free between the Mountains and the Sea. His sword was long, his lance was keen, his shining helm afar was seen; the countless stars of heaven's field were mirrored in his silver shield. But long ago he rode away, and where he dwelleth none can say; for into darkness fell his star in Mordor where the shadows are." - The Fall of Gil-galad, translated into the Common Tounge by Bilbo Baggins.

My first favortie would have to be Namarie by Galadriel and then followed by this one by Bilbo(I especially love the last two stanzas):
I sit beside the fire and think of all that I have seen, of meadow-flowers and butterflies in summers that have been;
Of yellow leaves and gossamer in autumns that there were, with morning mist and silver sun and wind upon my hair.
I sit beside the fire and think of how the world will be when winter comes without a spring that I shall ever see.
For still there are so many things that I have never seen: in every wood in every spring there is a different green.
I sit beside the fire and think of people long ago, and people who will see a world that I shall never know.
But all the while I sit and think of times there were before, I listen for returning feet and voices at the door.

To the Sea, to the Sea! The white gulls are crying, The wind is blowing, and the white foam is flying. West, west away, the round sun is falling. Grey ship, grey ship, do you hear them calling, The voices of my people that have gone before me? I will leave, I will leave the woods that bore me; For our days are ending and our years failing. I will pass the wide waters lonely sailing. Long are the waves on the Last Shore falling, Sweet are the voices in the Lost Isle calling, In Eressëa, in Elvenhome that no man can discover, Where the leaves fall not: land of my people forever!
this is Legolas' song about the sea... I think it shows so perfectly how much he longs for the sea and Valinor.

Exactly! Especially since it is just so sad... Legolas is longing so badly for the sea and yet he knows he cannot go yet...

Yeah. And it also shows so deeply an example of an elfs longing and the sadness of their departure.

"The road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began now far ahead this road has gone and I must follow if I can..."
Just... love those words. It says everything about the adventure ahead in the LOTR books... the adventure and the long road set before the Fellowship.
