Does anyone have any thoughts on Haldir, in the movie mind you, wanting to die when he was wounded? This is an interesting topic to consider and I already know what the people who made the movie had to say about it. But without their influence I want to know what you think. Did Haldir commit suicide at Helms Deep when he turned his back on the Urk Hai that was coming up behind him?

well it's a theory i guess, i mean he saw all his kin dead all around him, he had seen death everywhere. But it's highly highly unlikely an elf would take a "suicide mission" i think. or rather choose to turn his back on the Uruk-hai on purpose. i mean he didn't want to die, you could see the sorrow of his fallen kin in his eyes as he was dying ( which made me cry during that part of the movie) , and that was harsh, your last vision-you friends & family dead all around you,so No he did not want to die, he fought hard for what he belived in, til the last moment.

~thumbs up~ Elfmaiden. Very nicely said. I think the part that stunned me after watching it over and over was the way he turned his back, knowing the Uruk hai was bearing down on him and within striking reach. Haldir being a seasones warrior would know the how fast to turn and how quickly the Uruk was going toi be on him...step, step, boom! The fact that he saw and turned with no sword lifted for defence is what got me. He simply turned his back and braced for impact. Now in my fanfics he lives. I could not kill Haldir off as I adore him far too much. But the fact that his actions at Helms Deep speaks of the possibility of suicide is something alot of people will be debating about elves for a long time to come. Thank you all for your input. It is most welcome.

i would have to say now its not in elves to do that Well, although I admit that most elves are not wont to commit suicide, some elves do. I seem to remember some elves in the Silmarillion who do so, though no names spring to mind. But about Haldir committing suicide in the movie: I don't think so. He prolly was so overcome with shock b/c of the first blow that it didn't even occur to him that the other Uruk might be coming after him.

it's not really suicide, b/c he didn't kill himself. perhaps he thought that he wasn't going to survive anyway, and that overwhelmed him. the battle wasn't what he expected. i don't think it is in elves nature to commit suicide, but then again, i don't think tolkien was the suicidal type, and prob. didn't even think about it (while he was writing lotr) in terms of the elves. i could understand if the elves did wasnt to die - i wouldn't fancy being immortal, myself. in the movie i think that having a character that you know die was put in to emphasis the seriousness of the battle, which can be lost in legolas's and gimli's games. perhaps it was the easiest way to do it. but i was really annoyed that he died, b/c he is meant to be alive at the end of rotk.

I agree with herenya- he didnt do it so it wasnt suicide. But i think he went into battle knowing that he would probably die, and maybe he didnt care if he did or didnt. (in the movies, the books are different.)

I agree with Herenya as well. There's two sides of this. One being, that Haldir purposely turned his back letting the Orc kill him. (As Herenya said this wouldn't be suicide 'cause he didn't do it himslef.) The other side being, that Haldir mistakenly turned his back on the Orc and got killed. (Which I think is what most likely happened.) Either way Haldir didn't commit suicide. He just isn't the type.

No way. In the books, Haldir wasn't even at Helms Deep. None of the elves were.
