Lately I have been really glad that they didn't cast Tom Bombadil in FotR, as he is one of my favourite characters in the whole book and I think they would probably have destroyed him, like they destroyed so many others... Am I the only one thinking this or do any of you think that way too?

I'm glad that Tom was kept out too. If he was put into the movies, he would have to have a temptation to the ring too..and that just would make even less sense than Faramir having that flash of temptation.

I am glad that they did not include Tom Bombadil either.
I think that if he had been put in the films he would have been given a race, such as Istari or Elf, or many people who see the film would just see him as 'that weird dwarf guy'.
I think had he been in the film he would have seemed anomalous...

"I guess I am glad because he and Goldberry are like the only characters in the book that we can still see them as we did when we first read the book. I can't read the book now without imagining every person and every place as it is in the film."
Really? When I read the book, I still see everything the way I did when I first read it, which is a blessing, really. Especially Sam...when I first read it, I pictured him EXACTLY the way Sean Astin portrayed him...and then when I watched the movie there were no differences...very cool.

Another thing is (this probably sounds mean...) is it sort of gives you a feeling of superiority that you know things that people who have only seen the films don't. That sounds terrible

the character of tom would have been really cheesy if they put him in the film. you just can't capture a character like him...he's too unique.

If anyone has read the A-Z of Tolkien, it says Tom is of the race of Maiar, and is usually of spirit form, just like gorlberry, and I've no idea how they'd protray that in the movie, so I think it's better he was left out.
I didn't like him that much anyway...

Some characters were portrayed wonderfully, in my opinion such as Gandalf, Saruman (except his death : and Gollum, yet there were some who were not. I think the characters who were not portrayed as well as they could have been were the important ones who were not exactly protagonists (or for that matter antagonists) and yet were very complex characters in the book. I think that Tom Bombadil is one of them

imagine how long the film would have been then... he rhymes constantly so they would have to put in loads of poetry.
some of the non-readers would have got seriously bored. it isnt really film material.

I don't think they destroyed anything. But I am glad that Tom wasn't in. His character is the most subtile and difficult in the book. The fans would have been disapointed and the other wouldn't have understand why the hek he is in the movie and why he can't destroy the ring if he is able to tuch it and put it on his finger without vanishing. It wouldn't have worked in the movie at all.
