I just re-read the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen in the Appendices, and I suddenly felt very distressed. Does anyone else feel saddened by the descriptions of Rivendell and Lothlorien where nobody "no longer walks through the gardens of Elrond" and where "Galadriel had passed away and Celeborn was gone". Also the image of Arwen dying alone under the trees in Cerin Amroth is so upsetting. Reading FOTR and seeing how tranquil and beautiful things were before the shadow grew...and then the appendices show how the age is passing....

i always feel sad when the elves have to leave middle earth. they were such beautiful and happy folk, but i guess it was what they had to do.

The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen is very sad, the way Tolkien writes, it sort of...moves you, sometimes even to tears. He makes you care about the characters like they're real, and that Middle-earth is real. It's the only Arwen thing that I like at all, book or film . Tis sad

Yes, I totally agree. He makes you believe the world is real..so it all feels so real to you..then someone dies or the elves leave and the world you've come to be in love with is passing...and it's tragic.

You all just put exactly how I feel into words. It is so saddening that with the death of the Evenstar an end has come to all that once was. Not a real trace is left. Slowly that world will evolve itno what we see today. *sighs* A pity.

I could perfectly picture a cold, grey Lothlorien. It saddened me too. No more to say...

I always feel so sad when I think of Lotholorien and rivendell long after the elves have been forgotten. So so sad!

I don't even want to think about that. It's too sad.

Yes you're right. Arwen is my favourite, so every time when I read about her passing I'm in tears, it's a really sad story ...

I try not to think about it but when I do it's such a pity. All the beauty of the land and the elves ending.

I don't cry but I get very depressed. It makes me think how plain and a pity our world is.

awwww...this is turning out so depressing! we can always carry the elves with us in our hearts...i like to imagine that traces of rivendell and lothlorien are still out in the world, and we only just have to find them. ok, maybe i'm being a little too imaginative, but it's fun to think about.
