It does tell all about that stuff in the timelines..there was so much in the timelines though they could actually make another book out of it..explaining in DETAIL what exactly happened..that would be cool, it would be like Sil, except the After-Math of the LotR not what happened Before

I definitely think that Frodo, Bilbo and Sam died, because death is the 'gift' Iluvatar gave to men (so I'm presuming it would be for hobbits too) and I don't think anyone would have thr gith to take that from them.
But yeah I loved reading the appendices, the timelines and everything, but I particularly enjoyed the tale of Aragorn and Arwen. When I'd read the book I hadn't really took much notice of her but when I read that story I saw her in a whole new light. And it was very interesting to find out what happened to the other members of the Fellowship.

I guess if someone actually did write another book like Tolkien, and having the loose ends tied up, then they'd get so much abuse from the obsessives. Like "Tolkien shouldn't return, no-one is as good as him" and so on.
I'm not saying it shouldn't be done, it's a great idea, but the person who wrote the novel would have to be a brilliant writer.

Agree! It's very hard to meddle with the work of genius! Even the new maps irk me endless. Chris' tales are spun a little too wide too in my most humble opinion. There is a danger in having the thirst to know more quenched, it could leave many wanting and feeling betrayed as the movies have done for me... though am still in awe that they made it to the screen. It goes against everything that the hobbits would not die and Gimli too, but then they are in the undying lands for a reason, no? as for the 'epilogue' am abhorred I knew not of this, having loved Aragorn for many many many moons lol, but would hate to suffer through much of Sam and his blubbery happy life

I wouldn't really read it unless it was Tolkien. I don't mean to sound prissy, but I don't think any author could quite capture Middle Earth as he did.

Why are ye all so enthusiastic about the ending? I get so sad when I hear about the real ending, I mean they die just one after another and that pulls me down.....to think of all the characters I got to love how they died...dunno---it's just so sad

It's verys sad for us because the adventure and journey is over but imagine their relief. Al is at peace and the threat has finally passed forever. Though It's really sad that the elves left and I dislike the ending just because it is the ending.

^good point;) Dunno.....but I just don't wanna think of them to die because I love these characters so much! One thing (in the movie tough), in RotK, is connected with this topic and it's very nice. I'm bad at memorizing stuff. But Gandalf and Pippin have a talk about death and life after death and Gandalf explains life after death as something very nice. Pippin says something like: Then it's not so bad then... That's somehow connected with the "relief" you mentionned, isn't it? Anyways, for me the characters are alive! NOW!

Anyways, for me the characters are alive! NOW! Yes, they are. ;D It's amazing how a story can be so... timeless. In my mind, the entire Tolkien world does exist. It's somewhere beyond our own universe, in a place where time has no meaning. You can visit Middle-Earth any day - just watch the movies, read the books or simply let your own imagination take you there - but you can never go there physically. How frustrating is that! *squeals* Everything is so close yet out of reach.

Yes it is a connection in a way now that I think of it. Good point. I really liked that talk between.
My thoughts EXACTLY!
