Gilthoniel Elbereth is a song straight out of the FOTR book. It's played in the EE FOTR film when Frodo and Sam come upon the wood elves leaving the haunting song the elves are singing is the song "Gilthoniel Elbereth" in Elvish where as in the books it's in English. I sing it in English to the tune of "What Child Is This"

Oh Use Well The Days! Yes I remember that song now that I have heard it. That was going to be the alternate choice from Into The West which I have admit I am getting a little sick of, but it was a beautiful song.

You're right, it's definitely not played on a violin. I heard the Rohan theme was played on a Norwegian Fiddle, but I'm not 100% positive. They have the same basic shape as a violin, but are played differently and obviously produce different sounds. I find that if you put a mute on a violin, you get a sound closer to that of the instrument used. I know it's definately a fiddle - norweigian fiddle sounds right. Does anyone know what the msuic played through the credits AFTER into the west (I think it might be the fan credits on the EE) is? I know it features people singing but I've leant my EE to a friend! Can you download it anywhere?

I wish I knew as much as you guys about different kinds of instruments, to just be able to tell what it is by listening.
And I think everyone's suggestions on song additions are wonderful, but what I really wanted on the soundtrack was the Shadowfax theme. Every time I watch that scene I'm just drowned by the beauty of the music. It's so captivating to me. And I was really dissapointed when it didn't make it onto the soundtrack.

yes you're right the fiddle is called the hardanger (I've been wanting one since I first heard it in TTT) Instead of the 4 strings it's got 9, 4 on top, and 5 harmonic strings on bottom, unlike the strings you tune it to what the song calls for (which sounds strange because, I do play the cello and that would never be done) here's a site if you want to learn more about the Hardanger www.hfaa.org/hardanger_fiddle.html
