Yeah... You can't make music without unknowingly use fractions of other compositions.

I heard on like, a commentary or something that he borrowed a theme from Alan Slivestri's 'Back to the Future II'...but the themes aren't exact...they are similar. Thanks for the information. I've been racking my brain, thinking "Where on Earth have I heard this piece of music before?" and now the mystery is finally solved. *off to watch BttF*

the music is definately similar to other movies, but it's not "stolen" music is sort of like literature...there are certain themes and sounds and harmonies that sound similar. anyway, i think the hobbit song sounds almost identical to "this is my father's world" but it's not "stolen" because it's really is a different melody when you listen to the whole piece.

Yes, it's a different melody when you listen to the whole piece. But that can't keep me (my brain) from going "Whoa, I've heard this before". When I hear a familiar pattern of notes I instinctively try to place the tune and there's nothing I can do about this.... reflex.

obviously you can hear some of Howard's other compositions in there since a composer tends to have a certain style that you can hear in all of his/her works
just like Jumanji, Casper, An American Tail, Braveheart, Legends of the Fall and Titanic sound very much alike since they're all James Horner
or Cider House Rules, Chocolat, Mona Lisa Smile and Legend of Bagger Vance sound alike since they're all Rachel Portman.
And there are only so many notes to work with lol

Yeah, as Lossëindil said, it's impossible to write music that hasn't already been used before. For example, I noticed that a part of FotR's "The Shadow of the Past" sounds remarkably like the chorus of "Imaginary" by Evanescence. Those two probably don't have any connection, but they still are almost exactly alike. Interesting.

Well, one of my band directors last year told us that most good composers borrow, and great composers steal. Even the famous Star Wars theme is something else backwards. It's also hard to not write music that hasn't already been written. There is a lot of music out there, and sometimes you might hear a peice of music, then, maybe without even realizing it, you could put a little of that music into your own. If that makes any sense at all...
