a guy (who knows a lot more abt music than i do) told me that some of the melodies in the LOTR soundtrack were stolen from another movie...is this true, and if so, which songs were they from?

I don't think it's stealing but the Rohan music really reminds me of some of the music from braveheart. Though I think thats because the music was meant to sound celtic.

You could take just about any piece of music ever composed and find another piece that has similar components. That is the way musicians work. A lot of the time a composer will (knowingly or unknowingly) do somthing in his song that some one else has already done in the past. This (in my opinion) can't be called stealing . Also sometimes a composer wants a certain 'mood' or action or emotion to be played out in his/her music, in general there seem to be some ways that work the best. A good musican (again in my own opinion) is able to take the sounds that work well with what he wants and then is able to turn them into something different and add his/her own special touch . . .. and ta da a new piece of music . . for the Hobbit . . .lol . . .ok i don't really know if this makes much sence . . .but oh well [glow=purple,2,300]~*~Anilosse~*~[/glow] yes, this makes perfect sense. Melody, harmony, and coda structure have nothing to do with "stealing music". Quite the contrary, it takes talent to combine several elements, and turn them into ear-pleasing music. LotR music is my passion. My mother has notcied elements of a hymn in Many Meetings. Does this mean Shore stole this music? No.

Some themes/melodies were similar to Gladiator also, but I wouldn't say stolen from other movies, Howard Shore is a respective composer and I give him that much.

TEXT I don't think that anything was stolen from other music when they make the LOTR soundtrack. All music is similar in some way, and you can hear the differences if you listen carefully.

yeah there was a part in theRotK soundtrack that sounded really similar to something from the Star Wars II soundtrack in the Naboo theme...

some of the music reminded me of stuff from the messenger. but i believe that you can't steal music. it's totally inspiration, and if music from a different movie inspired a composer, he can change it and make it his own. it's not stealing.

There's this one part in "The Return of the King" that sounds exactly like a part in "The Lion King". It's really weird, but I don't care. I'll let whoever really cares battle it out.

I heard the commercial theme from TTT in a trailer and it was exactly the same from "Requiem for a Dream" but only there.
In the official soundtrack can be similar things from other songs due to that the directors and composers are influenced cometimes from each other....i mean....John Williams would like Danny Elfman's compositions so their songs would be similar.
Nothing has been stolen...Howard Shore is a great musician with an amazinf way of composing music. cheers

number one, I agree with Losseindil. Totally and completely. To Estel...yeah, I was playing the Fellowship Theme on a pennywhistle once, and my friend's mom said 'Oh, isn't that 'This is my Father's World?' And I read that The Two Towers 'Requiem for the Rings' trailer music WAS 'Requiem for a Dream.' They did that on purpose.

The music is not stolen! What nonsense is that? Imagine if a musician had to make different music than everything else ever made or else it would be stealing!

Howard Shore...steal music? Nah. I seriously doubt it. I heard on like, a commentary or something that he borrowed a theme from Alan Slivestri's 'Back to the Future II'...but the themes aren't exact...they are similar. And I don't remember who said it, but it is really hard to write music that is from your own brain completly. I mean, especially if you are a composer and you hear so many different variations of music, it'd be slightly difficult not to incorporate some of those themes, unknowingly, into your own music. I've done it...lol.
