It's time I posted this. I know some guys from WETA (won't name them or go into too much details for both our sakes) and two months ago they told me that yes, the Hobbit is in the works. By that I don't mean that it is being cast or made yet, but it WILL be made by Peter Jackson. PJ is working on King Kong, and next this upcoming WW2 movie, but it's safe to say that after these two, the Hobbit will be produced.
Rumours about them not being able to get the rights are unfounded, and could we all please stop worrying ourselves about who he may cast in the roles? Trust PJ. The only reason someone from LotR would appear would be in the case of something like 'A Short Rest', where the company stay in Rivendell (and it is safe to assume that Arwen may have been there at that time, so let's not get all funny about Liv Tyler being in it - nothing is confirmed).
I can't answer any questions about this, but hope this might clear up all these broken kind of conversations about whether it will be made, who will be in it, whether it should be made, etc...

To be honest, I don't know if I want them to make it, but If I can't stop them (which I can't lol) then I hope they do a good job of it. And if Liv Tyler is going to be in it then...I don't know what I'll do but I won't be happy because it'll spoilt it even more than LotR.

I'm with her. ^^ I'm still really not sure I want it made. I need something Tolkien left for me to imagine.

Ah, we have the Silmarillion to dream about - no-one is going to chance making that into a film.
Personally, I can't WAIT. And seeing as Liv Tyler is one of my favourite actresses, I have no objection to her being in it, even it she does have a tiny role...

I don't think anyone who would do the Sil. but I think the Hobbit would be good if PJ made it. I'm still mad a the 1970's version

I'm not sure if I want them to make the Hobbit. I mean, Elijah Can't play Bilboe, He's Frodo! And, I know they have make-up, but, Ian Holm can't play Bilbo either.

As long as they don't get elves in the wrong places and mess up Bilbo's homecomming, I don't mind them making the movie.
