Yes, there are a lot of similarities, and one of the most noticed ones is that in The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Tolkien called some insects "Dumbledors". As most of us know, the headmaster of Hogwarts is called "Dumbledore", and many people have yelled copycat at J.K. Rowling. I have to say in her defense though that Dumbledor is the Old English word for bumblebee, and Rowling said that the headmaster of Hogwarts reminded her of a bumblebee. So that isn't really as copied as other things (like the Ringwraiths/Dementors, Wormtongue/Wormtail, etc.). But LotR rules, the Harry Potter books are ok, and the HP movies stink.

Oh gosh, I can't tell you how much I dislike with a passion (I'm not using the word hate at the moment) Harry Potter! I think that not only is it copied, HP is poorly written and done. The movies stink and in my opinion, the books are only slightly better. GO LOTR!

theres only 1 thing I have to say about HP..IT SUCKS, there is nothing more stupid than a kid who goes to a imaginairy witchcraft school and slays all these horrible monsters and makes everybody like him and live happily ever after ya like thats gonna happen! now lotr THAT IS WHAT U CALL A MOVIE!!

Ok, there are similarities between the two but.... I don't think it's worth gettin hyped up about. I luv LOTR... how could u not? But I luv HP too! I own both movies and all 5 books, but I have to admit the books are a LOT better than the movies. LOTR has everything u need in a movie, it ROX!! I guess I just luv both and they have both become a part of my life. I can sit down for hours and read HP and I could watch the LOTR movies over and over again. But I like both and have no harsh feelings towards J.K. Rowling.

*Agrees*, I love both as well, my sister owns all 5 books, and I own both movies of each set, but there is one thing I don't like. J.K. took alot of stuff from other writers. The goblins, and cave trolls, but other then that, I don't see why people can't accept them both.

Ya, I guess she did steal a lot of stuff from other writers... but the books are very much her own and the story is defintely a page-turner. I don't understand why people can't like them both.

I dont think the two have anything in common...one is about a kid who goes off to learn magic, and the oher is about a guy who has to get a ring to end the world. They are both good books/movies, AND THEY ARE NOTHING ALIKE. No ideas stolen.

HP is OK I like the movies better than the books LOTR SO TOTALLY ROX DUDE! One of the main reasons why I don't like HP is: I don't like reading books about 11 year old kids going and saving the world. They are so young! (that's why I like the later books better than the first ones) And another is because JK killed Sirius Black. He was my favorite, then he had to make a silly mistake and die! But they do have a lot in common. But then again, no idea was ever original. (Except for LOTR )

I agree with Pippin.... LOTR and HP are both brilliant. Yes, JK Rowlind did use some of Tolkien's ideas, but what author doesnt??? My cousin read Beowulf, which was written waaaay before LOTR, and there were a lot of similarities, so even Tolkien had inspirations. The point is, all authors build off of eachother and you cant expect EVERYthing in a book to be 100% original, because its just not gonna happen. So dont get all worked up about it and hate Harry Potter. I dont care if you just dont like it, and its not your style, but dont go blaming JK Rowling for "stealing" since she modified stuff and made it her own, and Tolkien did it too. So just relax and enjoy the brilliance of the 2 greatest authors ever.

I do not like HP and the movies were absolutely horrible, but JK did write a good set of books, although I disagree with the ideas contained therein.

Well, I actully haven't read hp... or seen the movies... *gasp!* But from what I've gathered, it isn't exactly the kind of book I appreciate. It snubs the 'common folk'... what do the wizards call 'em... Muggles? How unkind is that??? In LOTR, the common folk are like, the salt of the earth. People like Sam and his Gaffer. Those people are respected for who they are, no matter if they have any 'super magic blahblahblah powers'. I just think that's really wrong to smug those less fortunate then ourselves.
