Setting: This is starting at the beginning of Season 4. Here is the summary of what's happened so far. In Shanghai, a disguised Sydney barely escapes with another agent on a mission gone bad; back in LA, Syd is berated by Director Chase for violating protocol. Director Chase declares that Sydney will be demoted, but Sydney responds by quitting the CIA. In Washington DC, Vaughn tells Weiss that he's leaving the Agency. Later, in a subway tunnel, Sydney uses a key card to access a secret office. Director Chase is there, and she welcomes Syd with a smile. The mission in Shanghai was an act, so that Sydney could join the CIA's new black ops division. Dixon, Jack, and Vaughn were also handpicked to be part of the team - by Sloane, who will be in charge. Sydney is shocked that the CIA would allow Sloane to have such a position, but Chase says that the team knows Sloane, and they will be able to watch him. Sloane explains that the CIA created their covert unit to free the agents from the government's red tape; the unit's name is Authorized Personnel Only, or APO. The team's first mission targets a scientist, Yuri Kamarov, who is selling a dangerous isotope for profit; Syd gets the isotope from Kamarov, while Vaughn poses as Kamarov to meet with the buyer, Tamazaki. Unfortunately, Tamazaki realizes that it's an act, and he escapes. Vaughn defeats one of Tamazaki's men and goes to find Sydney, who was left hanging precariously out the door of the train after her fight with the bad guy. Vaughn pulls her to safety, and they hold each other tightly. Vaughn relays a message from Jack, then questions why Jack is talking to Sydney through him, but Sydney doesn't want to discuss it. Sloane tells Sydney that he and Nadia found a valuable Rambaldi artifact and handed it over to the government; Nadia then quit Intelligence and returned to Argentina. Sloane assigns Sydney to go talk to Nadia, who is familiar with Tamazaki's boss. Sydney finds Nadia, who tells Sydney what she knows but says that she can't go back. Back home, Sydney confesses to Vaughn about Jack: the papers she found (at the end of season three) were an official request from Jack to execute Irina Derevko. The request was approved, and Irina is dead. Using the information from Nadia, APO finds a way to locate Tamazaki; Marshall is recruited to provide the op-tech. Sydney steals a valuable sword from a London museum, and Tamazaki takes the bait. He arranges a meeting in Rio de Janeiro but he insists that the thief meet with him alone. Despite the team's surveillance, Tamazaki kidnaps Sydney. He knows her real name; he reveals that he was supposed to assassinate her, but his client was killed the day before the hit was to take place. He tortures Sydney to find out why. The team calls in Nadia to help. She frees Sydney, who goes after Tamazaki. They fight until she sends the sword through his torso; about to die, he confesses that Irina hired him. Back in LA, Sloane congratulates the team on a successful mission and announces that Nadia has joined APO. Taking Sydney aside, Jack asks how she learned of Irina's plan to kill her, and Sydney explains that Tamazaki was the one Irina hired. Visibly shaken, Syd asks why Irina would want her dead, but Jack doesn't know. Syd realizes that Jack killed Irina to save her; Jack moves to hug Syd, but she steps away, saying that she'll see him tomorrow. Later, Nadia arrives at Syd's place wanting to talk about their mother, but Syd explains about their mother's death. They travel to Moscow, where Syd had Irina interred. Syd tells Nadia that she doesn't know who killed Irina, but Nadia swears that she will find and kill the one responsible. THIS WILL ALL TAKE PLACE WITHIN APO (AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY B/C WE'RE NOT PART OF THE CIA ANYMORE!)

Always keeps a fire going (even in the sunny L.A. springtime) for destruction of those pesky photos of duplicitous family members. Photos of more trustworthy relatives get the spot of honor--in the junk drawer. Sydney possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of both sorority mannerisms and Wal-Mart, and she's so smart that she apparently never had to go to class to complete grad school. And while many of us envy her often-gorgeous wardrobe and even more gorgeous boyfriend, even she can't pull off a purple punk wig.
