when you saw the movies for the first time, did the characters look like the way you imagined them when you read the books? even today when i just read the books, i picture the characters a bit differently, but they each have the same basic appearance as the character in the movie. i was wondering if anyone else felt this.

When I saw FotR for the first time (last winter) I hadn't read the books. So when I started reading I imagined the characters the same as in the movie. But when I saw TTT (three months later, because I had no dvdplayer) I had already read that part of the book. Sometimes the characters were almost the same as I imagined, but sometimes not (Eowyn, for example). Now I've seen the movies many times each and when I think of the characters I think of them as they are in the movies. When people say Liv Tyler wasn't a good Arwen, I think: huh? Liv Tyler IS Arwen! I think that's very good, because you enjoy the movies the most when the character in the book and the movies seem exactly the same.

I started reading FotR before I saw the movie, but Elijah Wood was on the cover, so I didn't really have to imagine Frodo. As for everybody else, I can't really remember. I kinda imagined Aragorn a bit different, in voice, maybe, but I can't imagine anyone but Viggo now. That basically applies to every character now for me. ;D

I saw the movies first, but I still have a completely different description for all of the characters. It's really wierd, because I even have the books the have pictures from the movies on the cover. My versions of the characters have some of the same likenesses though. Like hair color and length. But other than that, I have a completely different version for each character.

Sure they did! For me the only character that was totally different from what I imagined was Eowyn. But the Eowyn in the movies is much better than my own Eowyn!

Well, I started to read the books after I saw the movies, so I pictured the characters as the ones in the movies. (I hope I am making sense). Now that I read the books I start to picture them a little differently.

I hadn't read the books when i saw Fellowship, so when I began reading I imagined the characters as the actors. I was pretty annoyed when the book said that Boromir had dark hair! My mind wouldn't make his hair dark!
