I just finished the LOTR trilogy for the first time, and I gotta say that it's so depressing to actually finish them... after all the adventure and everything, then the elves leave and frodo leaves... *sigh* anyone else feel like this after they finished these books? It might seem wierd but I didn't want to finish those books- didn't want the adventure to end!

Oh gosh, I know exactly what you mean. I had been reading LotR for more than two months, so I was kiiiinda looking forward to reading something else (just KINDA!!!), but it was sad too. I finished reading the Appendices while I was baby-sitting, and I just sat there on the couch going, "Whoa. I just finished reading LotR. Whoa." It was emotional, really.

I know what y'all mean! It's a great story, and it's kinda sad to have it come to and end. That's how I felt when RotK was in theaters too.

I cried, it took me forever to read that last chapter (I couldn't see my line of vision was so blurry from the tears)

I couldn't have put it better. That's exactly how I felt at the end of it all. So depressed, though I didn't cry. I will not say don't cry, for not all tears are evil.

Aw! Glad to know I'm not the only one who got emotional reading the last chapter! Now to read the Appendices... then The Silmarillion. But do not despair! We can always read the adventure over and over again!

It might seem wierd but I didn't want to finish those books- didn't want the adventure to end! I feel like this every time I read the books or watch the movies. I ALWAYS cry. Even if I don't want to, it just comes naturally, because it's so sad. I've read it 3 times since last summer, and now I want to read it once a year, like Christopher Lee.

*hands out Cleenex and comforting hugs to everyone* I know it's hard.... but don't forget the Silmarillion, the Lost Road and all the other lotR stuff.... and don't forget that you can start reading the books over again and discover even more details than the first time and thus dig further into Middle-earth!!

I cried while finishing The Grey Havens...I was listening to The Grey Havens on my RotK soundtrack as well, and it was so emotional...I cry anyway, just hearing that song.

I know exactly what you mean. But the advantage is that it doesn't have to end there. Not only can we return and read the story over and over and over again, but there are the appendices to read, in which we can learn more of what happens. Then there's the History of Middle Earth, one volume of which (I can't remember which one!), has a story Tolkien started and never finished, about what happened after! It also has the epilogue he wrote for RotK and wanted in, but the publishers said NO! It's just too sweet! It happens when Elanor is in her Tweens and Arwen and Aragorn are going up North for a visit. Tolkien talks about the Ents, and about all the other beloved characters we met along Frodo and Sam's quest. I don't know, perhaps you can even find it online.
Everyone should find Tolkien's epilogue and read it. if you cried a the last chaperter, you will definately for this!

Yeah. I know you all are saying that you can re-read them but it's not the same thing really. Sure you may get more out of it the second time you read it but the first time is speical and the first time you read about them leaving, it's as if they have just now left in your head and all the after reads will just be like looking back on memories. The first time you read it, it finishes and everytime you read it afterwards you'll know what happens. I think that's the saddest part about reading the end of any book.

I see your point. I suppose it's been too long since the first time I read the books. I've just forgotten what it's like to read them the first time, I mean, what it's REALLY like, not just a few memories here and there.
