There are a lot of similarities and they don't really bug me... but it bugs me when HP fans say the lotr movies copied off the HP books lol. but if we're gonna talk about copycats here.. it's really Tolkien who has borrowed and taken so much from the various old mythologies (the Norse mythology for instance) and put in his own world. Just the name 'Middle-Earth' is taken directly from the Norse mythology which was the place all humans lived according to the old mythology (Midgård translates to Middle Earth, and if you read a book in English about norse mythology, you'll find the word Middle Earth in there). The trolls, the dwarfs (and their mines), the elves and all such things are also taken directly from our old Mythology. Even names such as Gandalf, Glóin and the names of the seven dwarf lords were taken directly. There's a really good book explaining it all called "Tolkien's Ring" by David Day www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1586635271/qid=1115633280/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/104-0842783-4350353I am not complaining since I love Tolkien's Middle-Earth, but if we're gonna start blaming one, we're gonna have to blame the other..

Tolkien's "copying" adds so much more depth to the books though, I'd miss it alot if it wasn't there

The point was rather that if you are going to say that it is a bad thing that J.K Rowling "copyied" from LotR you have to also say it was a bad thing that Tolkien "copyied" from these legends. And I can't wait for book 6 either ;D

I didn't realise how many similarities there were before I came here Some of the stuff like the spiders, and the dementors/nazgul bug me because they're so similar, but I do love Harry Potter. I've read all five and I can't wait till the sixth one comes out. As for the films, I liked the first two but the third wasn't very good. Hopefully the fourth will be better because GoF i's my favorite HP book , but I've seen who they chose to play Fleur and Viktor and I have to say that I'm not impressed

JRR Tolkien did not copy. The basis of a story is always floating out there already. For example Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet. The plot and some other bits and parts of it were already out there but he took it and made it modified and added to it to make it his own.

hey, what about...
Pensieve>Galadriel's Mirror?
its not that i dont like harry potter. but maybe she should have made LotR and HP different from each other.
