Its not in Middle-Earth... its what they call the Undying Lands. The sea in the middle is called the Sea of Belegaer.

Yes, you're never stupid for being confused! There's always things we don't understand.

I did thanks It was still part of the world right? though removed from the circles of the world? I know that sounds stupid but I would also like to know.

Hmmm..I never quite got that either. I think it is just on the outer edge. I know that sounds dumb.

The way I imagine Arda is much like the Earth surrounded by the ocean all around, if you set out from an Eastern shore and sail straight you'll end up on the Western shore or back at where you started, like you can not go beyond the circles of the world. So no matter how far mortals go they will be limited to the wide oceans around Arda. It's not that there's a stop sign saying 'End of Arda - You're now entering the Undying Lands. Mortals please go back'. It's more like the kind of logic that we experience if we keep going straight and eventually end up at the same place. *some more rambling on* So I imagine Aman situated just outside the circles of the world... somehow.... so when the elves, immortal, fair, keen-sighted, spiritual beings, Children of the Twillight sail into the West their longing for the Undying Lands is burning so strong in their hearts that that'll be their visa to enter the realm. The elves simply just keep sailing straight West and end up in Aman whereas mortals (unless they are especially favoured like the Ring-bearers and Gimli) are bound to the circles and see nothing but the endless sea.
But that's just another of the Elven mysteries that mortals will never fully understand....!

I actually got that. And I think that's as accurate as we're gonna get!
