Hi!
I have a question ;D. If you could choose the members of the fellowship, would you do it different than Tolkien?
Who would you choose?
I think I would keep it like it now is/was!

Oh, I would wonder what it would be like if Boromir and Faramir swapped places, but Boromir would still be the ring obssed one, what would he do when he finds Frodo and Sam in Ithilien??

That would have to be done very carefully. The ramificaitons of changing the members are great, for it would change the entire course of the story. Different members would react differently.

I wouldn't change any of the characters in the Fellowship. But I would add one more. My reason for that is because Frodo doesn't really count as a member exactly because he is the ring bearer and they are protecting him. I would add a female and have her travel with Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas; that way the story wouldn't change too much.

It's hard to consider changing it, becuase you don't have the same level of insight to other characters to know enough about whether or not they would contribute enough. I think it would have been nice to have had a few female characters in it, but i agree that girls just aren't as adequately built to fight/cover-that-sort-of-distance.(unfortunately) And it would have probably created a level of tension, especially since their opinions probably wouldn't been as valued, beucase it was a relatively sexist era.

Well acutally that isn't true at all, with elves anyway. Because the there isn't much difference in strength when it comes to the gender of elves. Here is a qoute from that essay. This is actually also a qoute in that essay by tolkien: "In all such things not concerned with the bringing forth of children, the neri and nissi (that is, the men and women) of the Eldar are equal...there was less difference in strength and speed between elven-men and elven-women that had not borne child than is seen among mortals." Here s a link to that essay. It's called What Tolkien Officially Said About Elf Sex: www.ansereg.com/what_tolkien_officially_said_abo.htm

^ Yeah, valid point, but I was thinking more along the lines of a Eowyn-equivilant. And elvish respect for there women wouldn't have altered the attitudes of people like Boromir. They could have sent along a female elf, but I still think it would have been a problem in a predominately male fellowship. my opinion.

i would have Gandalf be lost in Moria forever and Arwen sent to aid the fellowship that way Aragorn and Arwen's relationship would have gone further in the books!

Herenya: And a very respectable opinion indeed. But I still think it would have been possible. CE: lol. That's a bit harsh don't you think?

i wonder how things would have turned out to be if gandalf foundt gollum before the enemy? who knows. if i would have changed something it would be to let boromir stay in rivendell or something, and not let him go with the fellowship.
