Goldberry is an elf and she seems more girlish looking and sounding then Galadriel because JRR worte that Galadriel was no shorter than Celeborn and her voice was deeper than want. They hint at traits and characteristics that would asume her being an elf and maybe he said that mortal heart thing because she lives with mortals in the house of Tom Bombadil.

Generally she's wife of Tom and I think she's something like him because she couldn't be human!

Well you know how Tom talks about being there before the elves, before the anyones? that really fits to the idea that he is Maia. what else could he be? yah so then Goldberry could be elf and it could be like Thingol and Melian or shes an Maia. i think her being a Maia makes the most sense. and from what you read in LostTales there seem to be lots of Maiar in the world, those and thats were we get nymphs and other myths. bleh srry that doesnt really say much

I have proof Goldberry is an elf! Qouted right out of the book:
The hobbits looked at her in wonder; and she looked at each of them and smiled. 'Fair lady Goldberry!' said Frodo at last, feeling his heart moved with a joy that he did not understand. He stood as he had at times stood enchanted by fair ELVEN-VOICES; but the spell that was now laid upon him was different: less keen and lofty was the delight, but deeper and nearer to mortal heart; marvellous and yet not strange. 'Fair lady Goldberry!' he said again. 'Now the joy that was hidden in the songs we heard is made plain to me.
...But I see you are an ELF-friend; the light in your eyes and the ring in your voice tells it...
But now arises the question: It says Tom is old tom Bombadil, so I don't think she is married to him. But then ArwenEstel said something about talking about being there before the elves. Any clue?

Sorry if anyone has said what I am about to say, I have not read all the posts.
I think, like Tom Bom, she is symbolic of the earth. If Tom is the Earth, Goldberry is the water. I can't help but imagine Goldberry making it rain on her "washing day." Doesn't it start raining after the hobbits leave her?
Also note that she probably is NOT an elf. She has no race, like Tom. Just because her voice is elven doesn't make her elven. She is an enigma, just like Tom.

That could be. But what's an enigma?

A person who is indescribable, someone you cannot unpuzzle. And I think Tolkien meant for them to be that way.

I think I always saw her as a water nymph of some sort... elven but not quite.. a devine creature that has been around since the beginning of time and beyond

ok - i dunno if this helps or not, but i found this in my "Characters from Tolkien" by David Day - if anyone out there has it the page number, for referance is p.155 "Other spirits, who may have been servants of the Vala Ulmo, also lived within the Old Forest. One of these was the River-woman of the Withywindle, and another was her daughter Goldberry, who was Bombadil's spouse. Goldberry was golden-haired and as beautiful as an Elf-queen. Her garments were silver and green, and her shoes were like fish-mail. In her hair and in her belt were many flowers, and her singing was like bird song." in this book, Goldberry is listed under Maiar... xTx
