That's a really good question. I think that he may have been very fond of most of his characters, but I reckon it could have been either Frodo, Bilbo, Sam, Pippin or Aragorn... I'm not sure

I didnt vote, because I dont know if he really had a favorite. I mean, these were like his babies. He had created them and developed them and given them life, so he probably loved each of the major ones equally for different reasons.

I don't think he had a favourite, but I voted for Sam, because he is quite a perculiar character, he is constantly forced to leave the hobbit he wanted to live up to, and follow an unfamilliar way of being, although it may not seem to Sam that he cannot be a different person, he already has it in him, so he picks up his courage and tacles obsticals front on.

I know that we cannot know which one is his favorite, I am just asking which one do you feel we was closest to, which one was the most like him.

i think his favourite character was probably a hobbit, since he thought he could identify with hobbits the most. probably sam or bilbo.

I think it was Sam, as Sam was inspired by one of his closest childhood friends who died during WWI

In LotR i'd have to say Sam. Tolkien wanted Sam to be the hero of the story, he wanted the normal man to be the hero, like it was in the world wars. But the character he can relate to most is Beren, and from what I have read this is a fact, not conjecture. He based Luthien on Edith, and he loved Edith as much as Beren loved Luthien. He ever had the names Luthien and Beren inscribed on Edith and his grave. But I don't think this necessarily means Beren was his favourite character - though it's quite possible that he was - just a character he could relate to. But it's a ver interesting topic

I voted for Sam, although I believe that he poured a lot of his soul into the story of Aragorn.

I think that Samwise is Tolkien's favourite character because you can feel that while reading ROTK (especially in the end of ROTK)...

I think he loved all of his characters, or else why would he have created them? But I had to vote for someone I went with Sam. Not quite sure why but it seems logical. His favorite from the Silm is of course Luthien.

I'm not sure Tolkien had a favourite, but he seems to have a lot of fun with Gandalf.
