In the case of star wars, it was because the movies were made BEFORE the books. Although, I havn't read the starwars books so i wouldn't know.

Yeah and usually when the book is written after the film it's not that good and just written to make money.
I'm not sure though if thats the case with Star Wars as I havn't read them.

the star wars books are definately not as great as the movies...i am the type of person who always has to read the book first and then watch the movie...although i absolutely love the movie lotr, i have to say that the books are definately richer and deeper than the movie...plus, you miss so much great stuff if you just watch the movie and never read the book.

But in some cases...Star Wars was better then the books..But that's the only one I can think of. wll, yes, but ever read "A New Hope"? that book really surprised me because for a book about a film, it was good. it was before they paid other people to write the books for them. (i'm still not sure who wrote this one) i didn't particually like TTT movie, b/c i know the book well enough to think "hang on a minute - they didn't say that, it was..." (and when you realise you know the chapter almost off by heart, you realise how obsessed you are) and i was mad when they changed the scenes with faramir b/c i couldn't see why they would do that. books rule, i love books...

george lucas wrote "a new hope" and that's probably the only really good star wars book. i've read a few star wars books by other authors, and they're pretty much cheap thrill books. nothing especially terrible about them, they're just not really deep...

thanks for that! (re who wrote a new hope) i thought it might be him, but i wasn't really sure. why didn't he write the others, then, if he can write reasonably? i'm sorry, i put the quality of the book infront of everything else - don't really approve of writing just for money...

I must say for the fact that Peter Jackson had to take something like 1500 pages and turn it into a manageable length of film he didn't a bad job. But nothing could ever compare to the books. I somewhere remember some one saying that if Tolkien had directed the movies they would have total 50 hours and included 10 hours of lectures on Middle Earth history. The sad thing (well kind of ) I would have sat through it anyways.

I read the book before I saw the films and I loved both. But RotK film was, for me, disappointing. I don't exactly know what I was expecting but it must have been an awful lot. I absolutley adore the film, and was blown away by its majesty and think it's phenomenal (sp?) but that just shows how much I think the book was better.

I'm probably one of the few people who read the books after watching the movies and actually becoming a book purist. But that's just me. I've read them three times this year...and I've actually read the book The Return of the King more times than I've seen the movie. I'm so glad I decided to read them; they've completely transformed my life and I've realized how much I love the history of England and even Scandinavia. I would definitely say that the books are better, though being a fan of the books because of the movies, the movies definitely have their place in the spotlight.

The books were better than the movies. Why? Because the books are the 'real' thing. Peter Jackson's version is not the first, and it's altogether likely that it won't be the last. But each film has a different take on Tolkien's book - but the book is remains it's unchanged, wonderful, complete, story! Tolkien is the creator of Middle-Earth, so I think it's right that the book he wrote, and not the movie, should be better. But I have to say, I don't think we'll see a much better movie than PJ's version. It's very obvious how committed the writers were to staying close to Tolkien's vision, even if they weren't perfect. So I'm not saying anything against the movie, either. Because it's my favourite movie! And the books are my favourite books!!
