Unfortunately, I have not read all of the books yet, so I cannot make a sound decision. I am halfway through TTT. So far, I favor the movies.

Whoo yah. I really don't like it when ignorant people say that the movies are way better and the books stink...( Example: My brother...Being as he never read the books because he is too lazy too, and he is just trying to cover up his own insecurites )...

Hehehe, amen to that. My brother's the same. Although the jackson movies have got to be the best adaption, anyone seen bakshis (sp??) cartoon? Freaky sort of christmas carol music whenever the elves appear. But of course the books are the best. ;D No movie could ever come close to the depth of the original writings.

It seems to be the exception when a book and movie are equals let along the movie being superior...and I think there are few here who would say after reading the books that the movie caught all the detail of the book or even could

Yeah, I definately liked the books better than the movies! You all are correct when you say that the movies just can't capture all of the details in the books. There are just subtle things mentioned in the books that couldn't all be put into the movies due to time constraints -- and those subtle things just make the books so much better.
Besides the fact that a bunch of stuff was changed that didn't really need to be. Stuff that, when changed, totally disrupted themes and points Tolkien was trying to make (*cough* Faramir *cough* And whatever happend to Frodo and Sam travelling through Shelob's lair hand-in-hand??).

But in some cases...Star Wars was better then the books..But that's the only one I can think of.

Oh my word, when I saw the cartoon version I just totally freaked out, it was sooo wierd! Especially the orcs and *cough* Boromir's skirt But I think the books are better than the movies, but I guess if you put everything[/] from the books in the movies they would really long and boring in alot of places...though another hour in the movies wouldn't of bothered me...

I am a books junkie. Tolkien definitely knew what he was writing. And watching the FotR appendices I gained a greater appreciation for PJ etc. and the movies. I was quite ticked that Tom Bombadil/Goldberry and Beregond didn't make it to the movie, but hearing PJ explain that it was because they didn't contribute a whole lot to the plot (i.e. Frodo's quest to destroy the Ring). That gave me a better understanding and made me appreciate the movies more. I really don't like it, though, when people like the movies better. Where's your sense of imagination?

I think it's too difficult to compair them. The books were brilliant books, the films were brilliant films. As they are 2 diferent art forms you can't really compair them or at least I can't. The only time I can usually compair book and film is when one is disapointing after seeing the film/ reading the book e.g. HP films 1 and 2, Big Fish the book
The Star Wars books don't really count cause they were all writen after the films weren't they? The only ones I can think of at the moment are Big Fish and possibly The Princess Bride.
