Gollum is a great character ;D but like Sam in the books, I could not understand how Frodo put up with him. How Frodo could pity Gollum, when he was obviously so treacherous... it was only after I saw him (ie in the movie) that I began to understand to some extent. Before then, the most I'd felt towards him was a disgusted kind of pity-- if you can call it pity-- like Sam does when he finally spares him and sends him away-- but I just could not understand Frodo's deep sense of understanding for Gollum, probably because like Sam I hadn't carried the ring lol I did, at the same time, see the need for him, how pivitol a role he plays, how creative a character he is, how mean and spiteful and so utterly clever in his villany, and marvel at it. In that sense, he definately is on my favorite villain list at #1 (hmm...interesting thought...it is only after Sam bears the ring for a short time that he learns to spare Gollum's life...)

I didn't like Gollum the much, even though he contributed a lot to the story. I think that he was really kinda annoying, and I'm actually kinda glad that he died at the end. And my computer is doing really weird things right now.

This is a hard one... One side of me wants to pity him. He's been through so much pain and torture and That side of me was sad when he died. The other half of me doesn't really like him much because he does so many evil things that you really want to hate him. BUT...On the other hand, it's the ring that makes him do the evil things that he does...Gah! I can't decide... Did that make ANY sense at all?

gollum is a really interesting character...i like him for the depth he portrays...he's sort of a tragic, pitiful creature, doomed to play out his lot in life...i like him, he adds a whole dimension to the story. and i think that tolkien sort of wanted us to have this love/hate feeling for gollum, just like frodo did. he was forced to, actually...moved to pity, and yet again, filled with loathing...what an amazing author!!

Gollum is one of my favourite characters. Of course, I felt bad for Sam in RoTK since he's my favourite character and all, but still I pity Gollum too. He wouldn't have been like he that if it weren't for the Ring, who destroyed him. I love Gollum.

I felt sorry for him at first, but in the end I was glad he died because he had turned competely evil without the "Smeagol" part of him, if that makes sense.

I love the symbolism and irony surrounding him. People with addictions, or anything that eats at them hate and love whatever that thing is, but that thing is what destroys them as well. And he is just funny

I was sort of glad when Gollum died - not because I didn't like him, but because it was the kindest thing that could have happened to him. In the books, he is described a bit like a dog, and I think that was how I viewed him. Many people put their dog down when it is uncurable or in a lot of pain and misery. He had had the ring a lot longer than Frodo, and Frodo couldn't return to his old life properly when he had family and friends who cared about him, a nice home to return to, and the running of the shire to occupy him. Gollum wouldn't have had an open invitation from the elves - for him there would have been no way out.
I like Smeagol - not Gollum, and I prefer the Gollum/Smeagol in the book to the movie. In the movie, he didn't look at all like I had imagined him, which was disappointing, but to be expected.

i like gollum. theres just something about him.i feel sorry 4 him cause he was so tortured by the ring.i mean, the poor bloke lived for 500 years in a cave talking to a ring!i am sorry he died but really, what would happen 2 him if the ring was destroyed and he lived??basically his life would be destroyed with it,sorta like sauron except gollum didnt want 2 take over middle earth.
