I've talked to a bunch of people on the Tagboard who don't like Gollum. Tell me, everyone, what do you think of Gollum? Are you glad he's dead? Or is he one of your favorite characters, like he is mine?

I personally love Gollum. When I read the Hobbit in 5th grade, he was the only part of the book I liked (dont worry, I like the book now!) so I guess I have a special attatchment to him. I think he symbolizes human struggle and suffering. If we allow something evil (such as drugs, alcohol, general meaness, etc) to take over our lives, we will look sorta like him, not on the outside necesarily, but in the inside we will be this pathetic, shriveled, twisted little thing, unrecognisable. People do things like drugs and other bad stuff to try to enjoy life a little more, but in the long run it only hurts us, just like with Gollum. He was selfish and wanted the ring because he thought it would make him happy, but look at what happened.

I like Gollum in TTT (movie and book), but not at all after Faramir sends Frodo, Sam, and Gollum off--it's right after that incident that Gollum becomes extremely unlikeable. I also like Gollum in The Hobbit (scrumptiously crunchable!), and will always love the way he talks. I can't say I'm very sorry he died in RotK though, although I'm glad he took the Ring with him (ok, that was a duh kind of statement...)

i'm not glad about that gollum is dead, i think frodo should have help him, i think he could be again the same as he was years ago...
gandalf said not in vain: "Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo" and i think it too...
gollum was somehow nice...and he also has helped the hobbits to find the way to mordor...
but its right...in rotk i liked him not very much, because of kankra...there he was really nasty...

As I said Gollum was put on the bad list after seeing Rotk and also in the RotK books. But I have to say where i first started hating him was when he did that screech thing at Faramir. That's it! He crossed a line!

gollum is cool. it's not his fault he's all messed up. he just wasn't strong enough to ignore the power of the ring. in the end, didn't frodo refuse to destroy the ring too?!

i think that all gollum needed was a friend. to him, it seemed like everyone was betraying him. first all of his friends and family members, then the rest of the world, and then, his mind has become slightly simplified, and he cant see that frodo was trying to help him, so he atomatically assumes that frodo doesnt care, just like everyone else. youd be alittle messed up if you were completely unloved too! all he needed was a friend

Well, ya know, without Gollum the Ring would not have been destroyed, Frodo would have enjoyed dominion for about 12.8 seconds until the Ringwraiths got there and took the Ring. Frodo and Sam would have died, Sauron would have taken the Ring and plunged ME into everlasting darkness. Aragorn would have been pulverized by the troll. The forces of Rohan and Gondor would have been completely overwhelmed. (even Legolas and Gimli can't take on Sauron's entire army single-handed so they're dead too.) Minas Tirith would have been destroyed. And all the free lands would be conquered because the Elves would flee into the West thereby eleminating the last resistance. So yeah, I like Gollum. It's a tragic story. and as Andy Serkis said, "there, but for the grace of God, go I." (Liking Gollum yet, Alatariel?)
