Um. what are the Maiar? Can someone explain the difference between them and the Valar? (i had a really confused silmarillion reading)

The Maiar are spirits who descended to Arda (Middle-earth) with the Valar. They are lesser than the Valar though they still have great powers in Arda. The maiar serve the valar so e.g. Sauron is a maia of Aulë's house. Gandalf and Saruman are maiar too and serves Manwë and Varda.

They also were the light. Arien was the sun and another one was the moon, always folowing Arien. Anyone know the name of the moon-maiar?

Tilion was one of Oromë's hunters and was chosen to steer the moon over the sky. After the destruction of Valinors two trees the white tree, Telperien, bore a last silver flower which is called moon.
