Oh, well, there are MANY MANY different plots. It's an earlier history of Middle-earth (actually MUCH earlier), about the creation of the world (Arda) , the awakening of the Elves, Elvish history (extraordinarly interesting) the awakening of Men, the downfall of the Elves, the exile of the Elves, the downfall of Men, ect. ect. It is all that happens before the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. I highly recommend it and read it periodically!
As far as LotR characters that are in it, Elrond, Galadriel, Celeborn, and the wizards (Gandalf, Saruman) are involved some way or another, in their younger days.

Yeah, lots of plots. Basicly they all encircle one big plot though. It's about the Silmarils, which I suppose you could say are like diamonds with great power. Anyways, it's about all the things that happen because of the three silmarils. Morgoth (who plays a part much like that of Sauron in the LotR) wants the silmarils, steals them, wars break out, sons of FĂ«anor swear to take back the silmarils and there are all sorts of wars and problems resulting because of these three jewels.
It's really amazing. I just finished it. In fact, I am obsessing over it so I would highly recomend it!!!
Not to mention the wonderful tale of Beren and LĂșthien, which every fan must read! ;D

It's kind a difficult book to read but it's my fav! That's a group of different stories from the First Age of Middle-Earth but it's very long to describe, so I'll say just that you should read this book. Characters from LOTR, yes there're - Galadriel, Elrond (for a little time) and Gandalf (for very little time - for him there's more in 'Unfinished Tales').

You should try to look around on this board, there are some other threads discussing and explaining the Sil. You'll get all the info you need from there! ;D
