Oops. Sorry. Technical difficulties. Does anyone know if Ungoliant and Shelob are related?

They are. In RotK book where it's explaining about Shelob it actually calls her 'the last child of Ungoliant.' So yeah, they're mother and daughter

Thanks! I couldn't remember. I had just finished ROTK when I read the Silmarillion and I couldn't remember whether they were or not. Thanks!

TYou know, sometimes it seems that Aragog and Shelob are related. I waled into the room where my brother was watching Harry Potter, saw the spider and said "good old Shelob" - but it turns out he was watching Harry Potter!

i was thinkin: the two may not literally be mother and daughter, tolkien is pretty nonliteral sometimes. what i thought was that Ungoliant is probably Shelob's ancestor
then again, they really could be mother and daughter, spiders (in lotr) probably live for a long time.
i really dont know!

It seems like something that Tolkien would have meant. lol. That doesn't make any sense but it makes sense to me ;D

In the books they discribe Shelob as very disgusting. stinking, etc. but in the movie she was very scary! I'm afraid of spiders since I watched RotK.

Aye...spiders are very creepy.... But I think Tolkien did not like them either...since in all books they've got an creepy role... In The Hobbit in mirkwood, in the Sil, and of course in LotR.... But I respect their life....! Today I had a big spider in my room (aaah, I was so scared) and I told my dad to put her outside without hurting her.....I always do this like that

Ooooo... I read the Shelob part when I was alone late at night downstairs... I was terrified. ;D The giant mosquitoes buzzing around the lamp didn't help much.
