Lets post some hints for makeing the Sil easier to read for those starting it. I only read a little bit, but I found some ways to make it less confusing:
1. Read it very slowly and get every detail. 2. Every time you come across the name of a person, place, or even thing, look it up in the concordence (grrr, I hate spelling.)
If you have any, feel free to post them!

Good advice, however, if you're more....mmm...excited about getting to know the stories in the Sil. without interrupting the reading by looking up the name og place in the back and draw family trees for each character (just to find out that he only appeared that one time!) this might work out for you. Read it through one time so you get to know what's it all about, then leave it and after a short while read it again and you'll have have a better understanding thus you're able to remember the different characters! Enjoy PS. And yes, it does get better!!

I'll give another. Don't read it like a big novel. Read it like a big book of seperate stories, because that's actully what it is. You'll get confused if you read it like a novel, trust me.

Ah, this is very handy. I first had problems too with reading the Sil. Here's another: Only begin to read if you have no other worries on your mind. You have to be completely into the book. All your thoughts have to be with the book and the characters. Also when you read a sentence that is confusing, read that sentence again, and again, and again. Just as long 'till you understand what it says. And if you stop reading the book after a couple of chapters, and you want to read further the next day or the next week, read it again from the beginning.

The no worries on your mind is a good one. If your thinking about anything else, it's very difficult to read it.
And of course the write ups on all the people and places at the back of the book!! Without those it would have taken me years to read the sil.
My hint is to not read a little bit here, a little bit there. When you start reading give yourself enough time to finish the chapter which is it's own story. It makes it much easier because once you get into the story it becomes much easier to read and understand so you'll get through it quicker and it will sink in better.

Whoa, this is great advice everybody....! But... actually, just read it...and see if you like it... the Sil. tends to become a bit overrated and after all it's just a book... (in fact it's un unfinished book... though I've gotta admit it gives wonderful background information on ME!), read it the way you usualy reads and most important, enjoy yourself! And off course if you have any questions about the Sil. post 'em here and we are all here to help!!
