right, this is going to sound a little odd, but doesn't king theoden in the beginning of TTT remind you slightly of king lear (from shakespeare, that is). i don't know. every time i read TTT, i can picture lear...old, taken advantage of by others, downtrodden...theoden sort of is like lear in a way. he is saved by eowyn (and gandalf), and lear is saved by his daughter, cordelia. i don't know if i'm making sense, but it was something that came up in my mind.

Yes ithat is sort of true. But the thing about such councidences (sp?) is that the plots of Shakespear and Tolkien were already floating around out there and had been used but they took them and made them their own, which turned out so good they are still remembered today.

The Ents attacking Isengard is kind of like the bit in MacBeth where he is defeated when Birnam woods come to Dunsinaid.
Also in RotK the prophesy that no man can kill the witch king is like the prophesy that no man of woman born can kill MacBeth

That's true. Though I think they are just mere councidences.

Alot of authors do that without even realizing it. I've done that and my teachers point it out to me and I realize I had no idea.

yes, the macbeth thing i realised too. i think it's cool. of course, shakespeare has such an influence on our own literature, that tolkien probably didn't really conciously think about macbeth or lear when he wrote the book.

You know, I have thought of that before, and I think it makes sense. I did imagine King Lear (before he went mad) as a kind of character like Theoden: brave, intelligent, and very proud. And the connection between Eowyn and Cordelia is interesting as well... Tolkien could have had some influence from Shakespeare. Something for me to think about now...
