That's the way it was in the "olden days" to be quite accurate. Tolkien did things the old fashioned way. The only feelings Merry had for Eowyn was respect and admiration. And the feelings Eowyn had for Merry are again admiration, respect and knowing what he felt at certain times.
They had a bond of friendship and understanding. Nothing more then that.

Acutally the olden days were quite filthy as well but by Tolkiens standards I love the old ways.

^Right! They ARE just friends. And èowyn and Faramir are perfect together.
As for Éowyn and Boromir... Hmm, no. But it could be fun to watch Miranda and Sean act as a couple in another film, maybe.
