I was reading little bits of FotR last night, and I have this question: Why would they change the gifts of Galadriel around? Frodo and Gimli have the same, and Sam receiving elven rope makes sense, but what about, say, Merry and Pippin?
Just me being purist. ^_^

What did Merry and Pippin get in the book?

But the belts are important.. In Rohan: Aragorn finds the silver belt between the dead bodys of the uruk hai... You know what I mean?
i guess they just left it out in the fellowship, because it's (at that moment) really not that important.
Are you sure that theres no such scene in the SEE fotR? >>> Guess I have to watch it again

No, I just watched it recently, and she gives them daggers...and Sam asks for one.

Didn't Sam recieve rope in the books too? I know he also got a box of seeds of something, but that made sense not to put that in the movie, since there was no Scouring of the Shire. (As you can tell I really need to re-read the books ) The silver belts/daggers are important, but why they changed it, I don't know. I guess (in movie terms) if Merry and Pip just got a belt it might seem a bit blah. Nice, shiney daggers seem a bit more useful.

I can understand why Aragorn didn't get anything in the movie because Arwen had already given him the Evenstar in there and Merry and Pippin got knives instead of belts because it would be more interesting. And Sam got the rope from Galadriel because if they made her give him the box of seeds they would have to explain what he did with it. But I still don't see why exactly they cut out Boromir's gift giving.

I don't know...maybe it was just one of those "The movie is too long already" things...and they might have thought that since he was going to die anyway, it didn't really matter.
Sam did receive elven rope in the book, sort of. I think that the rope was in the boats, and that's where he got it.

See, everyone syas that but the point is that we don't know that he dies. It's just common courtesy of a person too. I mean sure the Lady knows he's going to just die but they could have at least shown her handing it to him in a quick flash without saying anything.
It's one of the elves at the boats who givkes him the elven rope. And Galadriel was the one who gve him the box of seed. But they didn't make her give him the seed in the movie because then they would have to show the schouring of the Shire part and they didn't do that so they were basically trying to cut out any hint of there being an appendice.

In the EE TTT Sam has a little box with some salt. I thought that was the box of seed the first time I saw it.
I think it's a pity that Galadriel forgets Boromir's gift.

Arien, when I said "They might have thought that since he was going to die anyway, it didn't really matter", I was talking about the filmmakers. Anyway, it's disappointing to me that they changed something that might look funny even to people who haven't read the books. Anyone know if they taped any footage of Boromir receiving a gift?

Yeah, I agree with Ktstar about Boromir's gift. If he was just going to die at the end, then why bother to add on to the workload by designing a pretty belt for him? I don't really get Merry and Pippin's gift though. I mean, they never use them. Would have come in use when that orc was chasing them into Fangorn. And Aragorn still found they're dagger sheaves with the belt attached. Maybe they were trying to satify Merry and Pippin lovers who probably would have said "Oh come on! They deserve more than belts. What the use in that?!" or maybe the film makers were just trying to forshadow that Merry and Pippin would be some use sometime. I'm just guessing though.

I think they should stay as close by the books as possible. It was not necessary to change gifts, was it?

hey what can I say, they changed everything else, why not change gifts? Sam's gift wouldn't of even fit in since they weren't going to show the scourning of the shire
