Hey, does anybody know anything about what happened to the Entwives, or even what they looked like? My guess is they looked a bit like ents, but did they have beards and whatnnot? I think Treebeard says they were less wild than the Ents, so does that mean they looked less wild, too?

Entwives: The mates of the Ents, who had their gardens in the regions later known as the Brown Lands. When Sauron blasted that region, the Entwives escaped into the wilds of Middle-earth and were lost to the Ents (or so the Ents themselves believed). It should be said that the fate of the Entwives was never resolved with certainty, but the signs are not hopeful. Tolkien's clearest statement on the matter is to be found in his Letters: 'I think that in fact the Entwives had disappeared for good, being destroyed with their gardens in the War of the Last Alliance (Second Age 3429 - 3441)...' (The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien No 144, dated 1954). This is less definite than it might appear, because he goes on to suggest that some might have fled into the east, and finally simply states of their fate, 'I don't know.' ( By the way, Gloredhel, you accidently clicked the button thrice. There are two of these threads. I'll be deleting the ones without posts. )

I assume that the Entwives looked like Ents only with their own female essence about them. I would also assume that they didn't have beards. Theirs is a sad story.

I always had this theory that the Entwives are the moving trees in the Old Forest on the borders of Buckland.

Wow, that actually be somewhat possible. They could've migrated north before the hobbits inhabited the region of the Shire. And then planted themselves in the ground(like Ents do when they get really old).

Maybe it's a possible theory but I do not think that thay are the same trees. The tree in the Old Forets I think is called Old-man-willow or something. So it cannot be an Entwife.

That is a pretty good theory, Master-of-Tookland! I thought vaguely that might be true when I first read the books, but I don't see why the Entwives would turn so wild...Old Man Willow I definitly don't think is an Entwife, more like a bad Huron (I don't think that is how you spell Huron...). Thanks you guys! That always drove me mad that we never find out what happened to them!!!

There is a definite mystery behind the Entwives. I would guess that they looked similar to Ents, though there is some suspicion that they didn't. And knowing that each Ent looked completely different than another Ent, I'm guessing that the Entwives looked the same? I think Rumil has the best explanation of it, though, I'd leave it to Professor Tolkien to explain it to us.

Hmmm...you have a good point there, SpanishEvenstar. They definetly all looked different, but I think they all had stuff in ommon, just like the ents.

Of course they had stuff in common. They were trees ;D but without beards. They have gone somewhere east or just have perished

Exactly what Rumil just said. Getting off subject though: I love how Tolkien always leaves things to mystery, i think he did it on purpose so people would still wonder about certain things in the trilogys..like we are doing right now

Yeah, he created a world, and then left some of it to the imagination. Tolkien is my hero. ;D ;D
