My dad always says that Frodo is the main character as he's the Ringbearer and everything. I noticed in the book how in Fellowship it's always 'Frodo did this and Frodo felt that,' it's basically focusing on Frodo but then in TT and especially RotK the attention shifts to Sam and it's always what Sam felt and what Sam saw etc. I think Sam is the hero of LotR, but I agree with Smeagollum that they are all as important as each other coz they all do something that has relevance to the story.

Yeah they all contribute to the story. Gandalf made them go in the first place, and Gollum destroyed the ring in the end..and then theres all this other stuff that they did in the middle..all the characters contribute.

Its him who set all this stuff off!

I don't know that there really is a character who was the most important. Of course, characters like Aragorn have a much bigger role, but I don't think that it makes them more important. Because without one character, it wouldn't work; without the deed that a smaller character performed, the larger and (seemingly) more heroic actions of the more main characters wouldn't be possible. So I think that no character is really more important than the other - they all have their own role to play.

Sam was! Without Sam Frodo wouldn't have gotten out of Emyn Muil! Then the enemy would have the ring and the end of the world! But Sam was there and saved Frodo from harm/losing the ring several times during the TTT.

That's true. Because all of the other characters could do all they wanted but nothing would change until the ring was destroyed by Frodo.

I votet for Aragorn, but I think Gandalf the White was the most important character, because without him, they wouldn't win the war in rohan.

I think that Sam is the most important character in LOTR because because of him Frodo kept going the whole time and Sam was a true friend, loyal to his master who actually became his closest friend in the end.

I don't really think there is one most important character because they all did deeds that affected the outcome and if they hadn't the ring wouldn't have been destroyed.

I agree, everyone is really important and without these characters the Ring couldn't be destroyed, all the characters - even the bad guys...

Definetly. whether big or small the impact, each made a difference in the outcome.
