I probably have been too impatient and because I haven't read the last two LOTR books or the Silmarillion I am just stupid, but what IS Valinor? Is that where they go when they say 'We go into the West' ? Help me here! Where do the elves go when they leave middle earth???

Valinor: www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.htm?http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/v/valinor.htmlIt's just a very small paragraph and it tells you exactly what you need to know! Yes when they say they are going into the west they are going to Valinor because that's what direction it's in. The Straight Road. Only elves could find it and were allowed there, though a few exceptions were Frodo, Sam, and Gimli. The hobbits because they had bore the Ring and Gimli because of the favor of the Lady.

Thankyou! I really must read The Silmarillion... and find all the appendices that go with the LOTR trilogy...
Does anyone else find it really sad that the elves left Middle Earth? Why couldn't they stay after Sauron was destroyed? *sulks*

Glassen hun! ;D It was really sad and I also wish they had stayed. But there time was ending and it was the age of men. If they stayed they would have to dwell hidden and would slowly be forgotten and begin to forget. At some point a longing builds up in the elves to sail into the West and they abid by that longing when the time comes. Valinor is their original home. And now that all the world threatening evil is gone they have no reason. So sad!

I felt sorry for Haldir... in the FOTR book he was so sad that he had to leave Lothlorien, he loved it so much. it really is one of the saddest parts for me!

It is. The elves are willing to give up what they worked so hard to preserve and create and love for the fate of Middle-earth. As Galadriel said.

I find it so strange that they have to go. "To be forgotten and to forget". So strange. I feel all wistful. But, at least they hold to their immortal beings over there, for that is the "Undying Lands"

Yes but actually that line applies if they stay in Middle-earth I believe. To slowly be forgotten and forget. It says if they stay they will have to dwell in hidden caves and such.
