I don't agree with witchcraft, either. But it didn't stop me from reading the books, and enjoying them. Personally I think there are far worse books than Harry Potter out there, and I get very annoyed when people do things like bann them in schools. As for the whole HP VS LOTR arguements, one is a book written for children and read by adults and the other is a book written for adults (and read by children). It's not comparing apples and apples.

I personally, will still be reading HP, but I think that HP fans think they are so freakin' great and that HP is better because "in the end HP will be longer anyway" even though that's a freaking stupid comment and they are too prideful and LotR is much deeper and...and I HATE HIM! Eek. "Him" is not Harry, I'm having some very personal issues loosely connected with HP and LotR...so if this offends any HP fans don't be unless your intitials are J. R. W.

TEXT I really agree with Jenny's views on inspiration. As a writer, I am inspired by things around me everyday, be it a certain plotline in a movie or book, a certain event that day, even a certain hue to the sky. (Yes, I'm strange.) It's not uncommon for writers to pick up and work around stories that they love. In my opinion, it shows a certain respect to the books to be inspired by them. I know I'd be honored if other writers were being inspired by my work!
It doesn't make JK a plagarist. She's not outright stealing the storyline. She's just borrowing some ideas that she apparently respected from LotR.
No one says you have to love HP, but please, if you don't like it, be civil about it, and at least present some VALID reasons not to like the books. Don't just complain about how much they "suck".
Stepping off my soapbox.

I was a regular visitor of on of the biggest HP chats for several months, and I never found that any of the fans on there thought they were better than LotR fans.... obviously not everyone was a LotR fan as well, but I dont remember anyone ever saying they were in some way better than LotR fans... So I'm just curious to know the story behind your comment?

I'm not saying that they are the same. Sorry if I gave people that impression, cause that was not my intention at all! There are many similarities, but they are two very different stories, two very different worlds. I'm a fan of both, but mostly LotR. It's a lot... Bigger than Harry Potter, if you know what I mean. i think that they have some small simalarities, but the differences put them on different levels and planes of storylines, other than those you mentioned and maybe a few other similarities, they are so unbeliveibly different, but both are most excellent in thier own ways

No Harry Potter fans think there so much better then Lord of the rings fans, so... why do you think HP fans think there soooo great?

My mom dosent allow me to read Harry Potter because of the witchcraft and wizardry but I'm very curious about the book. I saw the movie one time when my mom was at the store and I thought it was great, so I'm thinking of reading the book, but I can't. What do I do in this type of situation?

Hmm thats a toughie, see i know why your mom doesnt allow you, its because those type of people think its devil stuff, which it isnt at all! But they are freaking out and thats why a lot of people have never read or seen Harry Potter because of Parents not allowing it, because their parents think its Devil stuff..its just so stupid. Hmm well..i mean..i dont know..i dont want to tell you to disobey your mom, because thats bad. So thats a difficult question, but if you really wanna read something..hmm i dont know. maybe you should have a long talk with your mom about it..(even though she will probably still say no) but..then oh i dont know lol..i think you need to try to figure out what exactly you want to do on your own

FINALLY!!! thank you for showing me the light!! sorry but i have been around so many people who haye HP just b/c they think it is inferior to LOTR!!!!I am a huge fan of both!
Just tell your mom that it is not about "that" type of witchcraft. tell your mother that the main charcters in the book are fighting for a cause of good! maybe that will help!

Well, I don't think you should go behind your mom's back and read them, but encourage her to read them (or at least the first one) herself, so she can decide if they are real so evil and satanic, because they really truely arent. I am a Christian, and I actually find a lot of Christian themes in them. So yeah, talk to your mom about it, and ask her for specific reasons why you cant read them, not just that they are evil. And definately be respectful and reasonable about it, because chances are, if you act mature and respectful and willing to listen to her point of view, she will be more willing to let you read them.

I just don't like the writing style, it was written poorly, and is not as "deep" as LOTR. I thought that the fifth HP book was extremely boring and annoying.

I just don't like Rowling's style of writing I guess, and I don't like the story... But I thought the fifth one wasn't too bad, I think the first two are the worst, too childish and stupid ( stupid's not really the right word to describe what i mean but i can't think right now : for me. But, like I always say, that's just my opinion

I found a good book called "What's a Christian to do with Harry Potter," by Connie Neal. It's written basically for adults, but I found it very interesting, and I'd highly recommend it. The author says at her site:
"Readers of my book are consistently surprised at what they DID NOT KNOW about Harry Potter -- and the benefits they gained by informing themselves. Christians are divided over this issue, but the answer is not to side-step around it. We need to make the most of the unprecedented opportunities Harry Potter affords us. I show you how you can, whether you end up pro or con on Harry, while maintaining unity and civility in the body of Christ. If you are firmly set against Harry Potter, I won't try to dissuade you, as that is one biblically viable position. However, I will offer you facts to shed light on false rumors, help you protect your kids from real-world occult, help you understand the stories without having to read them, and help you explain your decision to your kids. If you are a Harry Potter fan, I will explain how this can be a biblically viable position and give you insight to I will also give you insight that will help you deal with the accusations and suspicion you or your children may receive from Christians who oppose Harry Potter."
Talk to your mum about wanting to read Harry Potter. Explain that this is not because you agree with witchcraft and wizardry, but because you want to enjopy the story for it's literary value. Also, getting her to read the books isn't always the best thing to do, but it can help. It depends on her tastes, and how she responds to things. I read one to my mum so she understood what on earth we were all going on about, and I don't think she really liked it - it wasn't her type of book. Your mum mightn't want to read them - but if you talk about it, she might be alright with you reading them. You are old enough to not be persuded to turn to the occult, and there is nothing in the book that will try to do that. No where does the book say "christianity is bad" or anything along those lines. I hope this helps, and I hope you will be able to read and enjoy Harry Potter. If your mum says 'no', in a few years you will be able to make your own choices anyway. Sorry I've rambled on so much. (It's something I feel strongly about!)

It does glorify witchcraft, but takes a lot of heat that should be pressured against His Dark maerials trilogy and shadowmancer. HP is nothing compared to those two.

No offence meant to anyone, but I don't like it when peoepl say bad stuff about books like HP and His Dark Materials because they are about witchcraft. It's not glorifying withcraft, it's just a story . And as long as it's not Black Magic and the Dark Arts, I don't see a problem with it . I don't want to bash anyone's beliefs, I'm just stating mine
