You're right! She is! I've never read them (in fact i don't mean to!!) but someone told me there's a person named Dumbledore too. I don't know how many people know this, but in Muse magazine's Nov/Dec 2003 issue, there was an article that said one of Tolkien's original names for Gandalf was Dumbledore!!! I just don't understand how she could use taht name in her books; but I guess she could if it was never published in a book and therefore copyrighted.
My brother says JK Rowling will probably give herself a second middle name that begins with a K (Klingon? Hmm...) so she can be JKK Rowling, then make up some strange reason why those Ks are really Rs. I can see it now; I believe him. (lol!)

*tries to calm self before i explode... deep breath*
FIRST of all- WHY are you dissing on something you know nothing about? Aredhel, you sound exactly like the people who say they hate LotR even though they have never even seen the movie or read the books! It makes me sick! This is to everyone who judges *anything* (not just HP) before they go see for themselves. It makes me sick! You really should be ashamed of yourself. SECOND of all- Tolkien did not make up the name Dumbledore!!! Dumbledore is the Old English word for Bumblebee- Tolkien probably chose to call the insects "dumbledores" because it sounds more sophisticated than "bumblebee." JK Rowling chose to call her character Dumbledore, because she imagined him humming to himself all the time, which reminded her of a bumblebee. THIRD of all- How many other books/movies/other media forms have you seen giant spiders in??? A lot of people are scared of spiders, and would be terrified if they saw a giant-man-eating one, so giant spiders make quality villians. FOURTH of all- just because two names have the same first four letters, you charge her of plagerism?! Think about what you are saying. Seriously, that is about the lamest argument I have ever heard. FIFTH- Um, Aredhel, your brother is making that up. Why would JK Rowling add another K in? I dont think her one goal in life is to be just like Tolkien. Her name is Joanne Kathleen Rowling, not John Ronald Ruel Tolkien.
Seriously people, if Harry Potter just isnt your thing, so be it, but don't attack a talented writer for a few minor similarities. ESPECIALLY if you havent even read her books! You hate it, just like I do, when people make fun of LotR, especially when they know nothing about it. If you are gonna attack something, at least have some VALID evidence against it not petty nit-picking. I wrote a lot more arguements defending HP in the "Life Outside LotR" section of this messageboard, including how Tolkien borrowed some ideas from previous authors, and how all authors from now to the end of time will contunue building off eachother.

HAHA YOU RULE JENNY!!! Also...maybe you hsould put some consideration into this: Before Tolkien had his idea about Shelob, there was another fantasy writer who wrote a book called "Afraid" before Tolkien published his book. It was about a giant spider who attacked a village. So,if it wasss soo easy for JK to get her idea off Tolkien, think of how easy it would have been to get his idea from Afraid. She got her name Aragorn from languages old languages. Go here www.mugglenet.comthen you can see a clear list of all the names she got them from. AND THAT ARTICLE WAS PUBLISHED AFTER JK STARTED WRITING HER BOOKS. Think about it... And what jenny said. You probably havent even read her books. And Legendel...if you would have looekd in another forum, this was already discussed. Waste of a thread. AND AREDHEL...OOO I GOT SO MUCH TO SAY TO YOU BUT I CANT!! Woohoooo you go Jenny!!!! This was pointless. Clearly your arguements were never researched, enough.

Okay everyone, be calm. I know this is a much debated over subject, but don't fume at people just because they don't have the same opinion of Rowling as you. I know you have been pretty okay with it so far- but I could see this getting out of hand- please just state your opinion of the subject, not stating that a persons opinion is wrong. Thanks guys, you've got some good arguments here, continue on. ;D

Krissy, no way in heck did Tolkien get his idfea of spriders from "Afriad" He wrote about spiders ,because when he was about 2 years old he was bit a Tranchula..how ever you spell it, and tho it left him no real fear of spiders that is where he got his spider materal. And thought I kinda like Harry Potter, JK rowling..whatever he name is, DID write alot of simliarties to tolkkiens book, like The mirrior that showed his parents can be realed to Galadriels mirior, teh cloak that made Harry invisble, can be realted the cloaks the fellow ship got to help shield tehm from Unfriendly eyes, and im not sure ecactly what there name is, but in Harry potter, there are these things they decribe tehm being in black robes and so on,, and tehy can be realted to Ringwraiths, i sawe teh preveiw for the next harry Potter movie and teh hand was comming thru a window, and it looked a LOTlike a ringwraith hand..SOO i think that Rowling DID take a couple of ideas from lordR-but at least she didn't do it so it was so obvious, i think alot of us just over react..

Sorry, I know I over reacted a bit, but I am just so sick of people saying that she is a dirty stealer, when she just used a few ideas, just like every author does.

IM NOT SAYING HE DID GET HIS IDEA OFF AFRAID!!! I'm saying that book was written before tolkien about giant spiders, so if tolkien didnt copy off his book, then why cant JK Rowling not copy off of his book? ? And if you want to see things to the things that you listed she copied off of...go to HP and LotR in the Outside Lord of the Rings

WHAT I MEANT TO SAY WAS....if tolkien can have original ideas, and this book was written before him,why cant rowling have originals ideas from giant spiders if tolkien can?
