U all have obviously heard the rumours flying around about the impending production of the Hobbit... All the magazines claiming it's more a case of 'when' rather than 'if'. Apparently PJ, Ian Holm, Ian McKellan, Andy Serkis and Hugo Weaving have all been stated as saying they would love to do it...
But what u may or may not have heard is the rumour about the Elvish princling Legolas making an appearance. Being the son of King Thranduil of Mirkwood it would be quite simple to include him in the battle of 5 armies...
But i'm not sure if it's an altogether good idea, i think the whole romance of LOTR, especially Orlando Bloom was his relative obscurity. People like himself, Dom, Billy, Sean, Karl, David... etc. were cast purely on the acting ability and not for the box office clout... a tactic that i think paid off no end.
any views?

i agree--i have nothing against orlando personally (other than the fact that i am sick of hearing about how great he looks)...i would just worry that people would go to see The Hobbit for sex appeal or whatever instead of what it's all about... LOTR was so cool b/c a bunch of formerly no-name actors came together to create a spectacular, box-office-hit film...The Hobbit could turn into a display thing...but then again, it could work out fine...i would be ok with him being in the movie, as long as many other actors receive due credit for their talent, and not just their good looks..

I don't think they should have him have a whole ROLE, but I think it would be fun if he had a cameo in Thranduil's halls or something.

Yeah that could be a good idea. I had only really pictured him trying to steal the film as the leader of the elven forces which i think would of totally sucked... Good batting think-man!

They should have him do a cameo. Or just be there for a little. I mean I'm sure he was around his father alot.

In this last issue of entertaiment weekly (wouldnt normally read it but it was an issue about ROTK) They had a cast interview and one of them, i forget who, did say that there was talk at New Line Cinima about making the hobbit so its not a rumor. And i think it would be a cool idea to put legolas into the battle.

If it's not offical it's a rumor ;D but yes I have the same issue, and hopefully Christopher Tolkien allows the Hobbit to be made, which is why it isn't already made in the first place ;D

i wouldnt mind it if leggy was in the hobbit, just for a bit more familiarity...but not to take away the spotlight of whoever gets to play bilbo of course
...and of course it's just a rumour, but i think christopher will give them the rights...i mean the hobbit movie site is pretty popular and they have already sent and gotten a reply from new line cinema...

I like Legolas, not because of Orlando playing him, but because of who he actually is. (I loved Legolas more in the book then I love the elf they made him in the movies.) But I don't think he should realy be in The Hobiit. He's never mentionned or anything. Maybe a cameo would be cool, somewhere in Mirkwood...
The people who would go to see The Hobbit because Orlando is in it, should be captured and tortured by Sauron Himself, or maybe just eaten by Smaug!
Immagin that they would have Orlando play his own father in The Hobbit... would be kinda funny ;D (I bet half the audience would have absolutely no clue that he's actually not playing Legolas, but Thranduil. Shame on them.)

Yeah, i've kind of always wondered if Legolas should be in the Hobbit. Cuz' when TOlkien wrote it, he hadn't even INVENTED Leggie yet. I personally think that there's no reason he shouldn't be in there. After all, he is Thranduil's son. He'd probably show up in the Battle of Five Armies. maybe he'll get wounded! *evil grin* (I like hurting and torturing my characters, but not killing them. That's why I wasn't fond of Troy) I really hope they don't overplay the role though. Legolas is my fav character, but mostly cuz of the books. in there he's a really neat fellow. In the movies, especially ROTK he's not too interesting. "a diversion" give me a break!!! But you kind of get the impression that he knew Aragorn before LOTR. Hey! That's another thought! Aragorn was about ten at the time. Perhaps they could have a mini-Estel make an appearance in Rivendell. I think it would be cute. I wonder who they'll get to play Thranduil? I pray it isn't Orli. If they do that, I'll go see the movie, but only so I can know what I'm ranting and raving about.
OK

You can't have the King without the Prince. But that's my take. The people who know the books well enough (besides us) would wonder what happened to the Prince of Mirkwood. Sure, Tolkien hadn't created Legolas or Aragorn, but given the time frame, it would be a "duh" factor to put him in. Unless they decide to give Thranduil an incredibly minor part, Legolas would have to be in there somewhere. It's a given. Whether Orlando plays him or not I could care less (though it would look incredibly strange to see "another" Legolas), but if they have the King, there has to be the Prince.

just as long as they don't overplay the role. would hate it if he tried to steal the film.

I agree that it would be easy to overdo it. While I'm not a Legolas fangirl, I have no objection to seeing him in a cameo roll in The Hobbit. Actually, I think that as long as they keep it a cameo appearence, it would be a nice little bridge, and help establish his disgust of dwarves in LOTR movies... Just an appearence in the elven-king's halls or perhaps at the battle... it would certainly be easier to pull off than say Arwen, who was in Lothlorien at the time.
