I have finished The Hobbit and I am just about to start on the LOTR trilogy- regarding the elves and Middle Earth history described in The Silmarillion, do you think I should read that before I start on the trilogy?
Pleeeease help me, I want to understand what I'm reading in LOTR!

I think read the Lord of the Rings first. The Sil. is much more complicated, and difficult to understand. I found it not easy to read after I'd read LOTR! Reading LOTR first will not spoil for you what happens in the Sil, anyway. So read the Lord of the Rings first.

I agree with Herenya. Even if you have seen the movies there are still characters in the books that didn't make it to the movies, so if you read the trilogy first you'll gradually add on to the amount of characters. The Sil. is wonderful because it gives all the background info on ME but to me it makes more sense to read the LotR first so you know what the info is all about And as Herenya says it might be tough to read through the Sil. because Tolkien is name-dropping like crazy and introducing new characters especially in the beginning! Enjoy the reading!

Yeah. I think it'd be a lot easier to read the trilogy first and more of a clear picture from that before you read the Sil.

Reading the LOTR series first is better and then starting on tlhe Silm. After you've finished the Silm you should go back and skim the LOTR series because then you may find you understand it better. That's how I felt.

yea, its best if u read the lord of the rings first. it kinda gets the basic aura/foundation down--and, the silmarillion is a tad bit complicated.
have fun ;D

It is better to read lotr first, but it doesnt make that much of a difference, its hard to read before, and after u read lotr, i almost fell asleep reading it, it is very complicated, my english teacher can barely understand it lol

You put the banners url into your signature (click Profile to get there) and then the image code like this (just without the *): [*img] "the url of your banner" [/img] (You can request a banner or ask more questions in the Signatures/Avatar forum! )
