I thought it might be helpfull to have answers to the questions that keep getting asked here.
1. Where can I get my site hosted for free?
Freewebs members.freewebs.com/ is a good place to start with. If you know nothing about webdesign you can make a page easily. You can also use HTML. They have small adverts at the bottom of pages and once you're doing the HTML yourself you can just put your own link.
Some people also use Geocities geocities.yahoo.com/ but they have annoying adverts. There is a way of getting rid of them but you risk getting your site deleted. You get more bandwidth in geocites though.
Another one is www.fateback.com/
A good one for experts is dhost.info/ They let you use PHP, you get loads of space and there's no ads. You need to use FTP to upload your site though and have to write a short description of your site before they accept you.
You can also see if your internet provider gives you web space. Mine gives me 50 mb, as far as I can tell unlimited bandwidth and no ads ;D
Another thing you can do once you've got quite a bit of experience is to get hosted by another webmaster. Here's a list of sites that host, thanks Paula for this:
www.pure-radiance.com
www.till-morning.net
www.just-breathe.com
www.twilight-visions.net
www.fallen-knights.net
www.angelichope.com/
www.captive-soul.com/
www.carousel-lights.net/
www.celestial-star.com/
www.elven-star.net/
www.magic-host.org/
www.unfaithful-mirror.net/
If you go to www.pick-me.net/ you'll find lots more hosts.
2. Can I get a free domain name?
Not in the proper sense of the word, so you can't get a free .net or .com name. However you can get a www.yoursite.cjb.net/ address at www.cjb.net to point at your site.
3. What's the code for ......?
Here are a few basic codes:
To put an image:
<img src="yourpic.gif">
To have a background colour:
<body bgcolor="#000000">
or a backgound image is:
<body background="your background image name.gif">
To put a link:
<a href = "websitepage.html">link</a>
To make an image a link:
<a href = "websitepage.html"><img border = "0" src="yourpic.gif"></a>
To make an email link:
<a href="mailto:you@hotmail.com">email me</a>
4. What's "Bandwith stealing" and "hotlinking"?
They are both terms for taking other peoples graphics, putting them on your site but not uploading them yourself so leaving them to load from the other person's website. You do this when you copy the graphics URL and just put that straight on your site. You shouldn't do this as it is stealing their bandwidth which can cause their site to shut down. Instead save the picture on your computer and upload it to your website from there.
5. Where can I learn how to make a website?
There's lots of great sites on the internet that teach you how to use HTML and once you've learnt that PHP and other more advanced languages. Here are a few of the sites I use:
www.htmlgoodies.com/ - if you're a beginner try starting off with the HTML primer. I found it very helpful when I was learning.
www.lissaexplains.com/ - This site's nice and bright and colourful. It's also easy to understand as it's made for kids. The section on CSS is particulay useful.
www.xentrik.net/index.php - quite good for I-frames and other website layout techniques
star-girl.org Has a very helpful skinning tutorial, as well as some other good advanced tutorials.
