The only thing I know is why they are called Halflings, and thats because the Numenoreans found them first and the hobbits where half their size, thats the first accounting of Hobbits. It is called encounter, but other than that it was right.

The dwarves are the Naugrim! and I think Hobbits are some sort of elves that are just really short. But that's a good question about who actually made them. Prolly Iluvatar.

Didn't one of the Valar make the dwarfs? I know he got in trouble with Iluvatar for doing it. So I'm thinking Iluvatar made the Hobbits. Because anyone else should've recognized the mistake. Except Morgoth, the Valar love Iluvatar so they'd obey him. Although, I guess its possible that one of the Valar made the Hobbits. Morgoth couldn'tve made them or they'd be evil. He's the only one that would deliberately go against Iluvatar's rules. I'm currently reading the Sil and I'll watch to see if it says where they came from.

I'm reading it too, but some things I don't get like that Hobbit question, I just go to the Encyclopedia of Arda, it's a great page where they explain anything LotR: www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.htmAnd it's not about the movies, it's about the books, but they do have sections for the movies.

I'm not that far yet but I'm working on it. I'm impressed that you're understanding it. I'd never be able to understand it if it was in another language. I do like that site though. Sarawen

I've read The Silmarillion 15 times in the past year and I have a theory that in the beginning when the three themes were being made, and Melkor was constantly trying to ruin them, and Iluvatar said that all he did would turn to good and Melkor's downfall.I reckon that Iluvatar changed some of Melkor's theme to goodness and made Hobbits out of them. For in the end,Sauron was melkor's servant, and Hobbits were Sauron's undoing. And it is said that Melkor wanted to make beings of his own,I reckon Hobbits are some sort of twist in his thoughts. He did not intend to make Hobbits, but Iluvatar made them real, making his own prophecy come true.... That's my theory anyway...

Wow, that is sooo interesting, never looked at it that way. You could be right, at least it's a great theory!

I am blonde, but also veeery smart ;D I know J.R.R. Tolkien made them--lol But that does not change the fact that they are real... ;D
I saw that there was a post where it said that Morgoth could not have made them, and that is correct, because he had only the power to alter things, make them twisted, wicked and evil, not actually make them from scratch.
